Sad. I don't know if being able to swim would have made much of a difference though in something that unexpected. The pull of the water bringing you down, as well as the shock could cause even an experienced swimmer to inhale while under water.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

+1.

Growing up, there were a lot of rivers we'd swim in during the summer and the two things that consistently scared the hell out of me were the snakes and the sink holes. With the worst of the latter, it doesn't even matter if you're an experienced swimmer and you've got a life jacket on, you're going under.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Some notes on the brothers who died...two were to be seniors at Woodlawn High School this year. One aspired to become a policeman, the other wanted to be a firefighter.

The youngest brother also attends Woodlawn, where he made straight A's last year. His life's ambition was to be a judge.

By all accounts, all three brothers were well-behaved, polite young men.

All died trying to save their friends or brothers.

I wasn't aware that underwater sinkholes could *pull* you under, I figured they were already filled with water and are just a deeper area of where you are swimming. I'm googling it now to learn more...I was only really aware of above-ground sinkholes that swallow roads, homes, etc.

BTW - interesting to know their background, Jolly. My first reaction was "if you can't swim, why would you jump in and try and help?" and then my second reaction was, "Wow, if you can't swim, it says a lot that you jump in and try and help." Sad day indeed.

But I'll bet you knew how to swim.

Slight update, I found this video of someone free diving the world's largest underwater sinkhole. Not only is the feat impressive, but I can see here how he "rides" the current down, and literally has to climb his way out along the edge of the "cliff"...

Rivers ain't lakes. The currents are a force to be reckoned with. They undercut banks, create eddys, wreak all kinds of aquatic havoc.

An example...many years ago down at Three Rivers - where the Black, Red and Mississippi rivers come together, there was an eddy so strong, we watched a floating full grown oak tree swap ends in the current, stand straight up, get sucked under water, and emerge 200 yards down the river.

I know a lot more now than I did then about how to handle swimming against strong currents. Learned it from whitewater canoeing. Although I did know how to swim, we were still very lucky.
