This is in preparation for something:

I'm looking for the 20 greatest piano sonatas of all time.

Let's make a list, sorted by composer, and list the top 20 (or 25) sonatas by all composers.

I'll start:

Beethoven #14 - "Moonlight"

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Don't need a list of 20, Ax. Just some that you consider the best. I want to come up with a list of 20 to 25.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

And Liszt.

Of course!

I don't know the Sibelius.

What, no Scarlatti?

OK, I just looked. Sibelius has three Sonatines, all Op 67.

well, I really love Sibelius, so I'm a bit biased..
(the sight of that sonatina in a list with the Hammerklavier makes me blush a bit, though)

here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVR-PIGHpYI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB1PLlnGYm8
(that tiny 2d movement, so little, yet deep (ok, to me at least))

Scarlatti, yeah, plenty, but it's not the 'sonata form' you want in your top 20 list.

OK, here's what I'm planning to do:

I saw this on Amazon. There's a list of works (the list I saw was piano concerti) that has 20 - 30 pieces. Each piece is assigned an arbitrary value of 5 points. So, if the list has 20 pieces, there's a total of 100 points to be awarded.

Each person can vote on a given list by subtracting a point from a piece they don't like, and adding it to one that they do, keeping the total to 100 (or whatever) points. When a piece has 0 points, it falls off the list, decreasing the number to 19. The process continues until there is a winner.

I'd like to get a list of 20 - 30 that can compete.

So, yeah, if you think Scarlatti belongs, by all means, add it. I'll pick the top votes and put them up, head to head.

Should be fun - if you're into that kind of stuff.

Beethoven op 57 doesn't seem to be making many people's lists - but i think it is one of the greats

Scriabin 5, 9 and 10

Yep. op. 57 should be on the list. Scriabin 9 and 10 are great pieces too.
