I can only speak for my situation, but in my opinion, our school's fine. Great staff, great kids. In fact, Massachusetts has many of the top performing schools in the country. According to an article I heard recently, they have one of the top performing systems for teaching mathematics in the world. Obviously, Massachusetts is a very conservative state, so maybe that's it. I suspect that it's a universal truth that things just aren't what they used to be. There are apparently ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics bemoaning the fact that children just don't respect their elders the way they used to. |

A challenge: Sign up to sub at your child's school, or almost any other public school. Try to work on at least three different days during the school year, in three different classrooms. Get back to me on what you find. I think you'll be shocked. |

No, we're in Foxborough, Massachusetts. It's well known as having very good schools, in a state which is also one of the best performers in the country for education. That was one of the reasons we moved there. I mis-spoke earlier - Mrs. D'Oh was actually a little surprised by the school. She went to private school, and was expecting to have to consider doing the same with our kids. She changed her mind after visiting. We may be unpleasantly surprised later, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It's not about liberalism. Least ways, if it is, it's pretty clear that liberal Massachusetts isn't failing due to liberalism. How many red States do as well as Massachusetts in educating their children? |

Of course - I don't think anybody's saying that education couldn't be improved, and some of the PC policies are a bit ridiculous at times. However, the implication that the end of the world is nigh is just plain silly. To be honest, the writer of the article sounded like someone who was pretty fed up with the modern world and was trying to make everything how it was when she was young. You can't go back. |

I think the observations he makes apply to inner city schools, and are probably accurate. I don't believe the problems exist because of liberalism. They exist because of lack of money. Good schools exist in liberal communities outside of the inner city. Bad ones exist too. Also, in the vein of "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem," what did the author exaclty do to help things when he was a working professional in that system? Heck, liberalism (as the term is used in the US) is what makes good public schools. Conservatism (as the term is used in the US) would strip public schools of funding and limit the curriculum to the Christian bible.

When I went to school we had about 30 kids in a class with one teacher. My son's have a 13:1 ratio plus a teaching assistant. I don't see how it's possible for him to be getting less than I got. |

Bingo. I taught briefly in a couple of inner-city schools in Manchester, UK. That was a bloody eye opener, almost literally in one case. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
I think the piece they are neglecting, and this is typical of those who seek systemic solutions to local problems, is this: You want good schools, you have to have good parents, a good community. No school board anywhere will ever have enough money to make a great school district on its own. You go to where families and parenting are weak? You have bad schools. You go to where parents are involved and value education? Good schools. Amazing parallel. These folks who want the federal government to step in and do something rail at the symptom, not the cause. They are in fact perpetuating the root cause with their efforts. |
