HOLY CARP!!!
Kincaid - I agree. I'm admittedly naive on the subject, and only know what I've read. I'd also be curious to know if the 3% is accurate, or the 40%. I'm sure my 1% number is inaccurate, as I think the number I was trying to remember was the 3% jolly cited.

Still - I'd like to know what it really was.

Not to mention that the percentage of slave owners in the South was something like 1%? It wasn't widely practiced, and wasn't widely accepted - just to further LsD's point.
Definitely no more than 3%, which kinda gives lie to slavery being the primary reason for the Civil War.

Don't forget, 11% of blacks in the South were free, and some of those owned slaves along with some slave ownership in the Indian tribes.

Slavery was an important cause of the Civil War. Not the only cause, but it was pretty important. Take a look at Randall and Donald, "Civil War and Reconstruction." In 1860 over 40% of southern families owned slaves. Thousands of land owners owned 50 or more slaves. 95% of the African American population was in southern states. There was a huge concern in the south about the social and economic consequences of mass emancipation.

A lot of people in the north think slavery was the only cause. A lot of people in the south think slavery was not the cause. The truth is, it's somewhere in the middle.

As far as the white knight comment, you can shove it. I don't need to explain myself to you.
Why not?

What makes you Kathy's protector?

I don't need explanations, I just don't understand the need to play Buttinsky.

Mr. Obama's ancestors were slave owners - on his mother's side.

And according to this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/09/michelle-obama-white-slave-owner

If I'm reading it right, Mrs. Obama's white great-great-great grandfather was the owner of her black great-great-great grandmother.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Nor the need to egg on and abet either.

Face it Jolly, this is a public forum. There's no privacy here. Somebody posts something personal to another on a public forum, don't think for a minute we're all gonna stay mute. Especially when it's the usual juvenile bull**** that he spews.

You fvckers are pathetic. You let a single woman get in your craw. And no, you can't assail her ideas, you have to assail her person. I guess that makes you a left winger then eh?

Oh, I think I've gone around the Maypole lots of times with Kathy's ideas. But since y'all can't seem to think the woman can fight her own battles, please continue to dogpile as you feel called.

But, as you said, it's a public forum, so I don't mind saying that the knight errant bit wears thin.

And as for whether you stay mute or not, that's your business. OTOH, Mark Twain once said it's better to stay quiet and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

Plebas, if you see my comments to her as being juvenile, that's fine. You have a right to your opinion, and I have no hard feelings toward you whatsoever.

I disagree with you however, as I'm sure you know. I can be juvenile when I want to be, just like everyone else here can be, and are at times. But the simple fact is, the woman is an idiot. Where you get the notion that we can't "assail her ideas" is beyond me - she NEVER knows what in the hell she's talking about, and 9 times out of 10 if she runs her yap long enough she ends up having to admit she doesn't know anything about what she's talking about at the time.

She "got in my craw" a looooong time ago, and I have good reason to have about as much use for the woman as a boar hog has use for tits. But that's a separate issue entirely from the fact that she cannot open her mouth without making the stupidest statement possible.

I don't mind an asshole - in fact, I rather enjoy a good row with another asshole. But I have little patience for a fool, and the more I have to put up with one the shorter my patience gets.

So again, no hard feeling on my part. You've made your point to me, you disagree with my view and don't like that I speak my mind about it. You have a right to say so, just as I have a right to tell her she's a twit when she says something stupid.

From WikiAnswers:

There are many misconceptions as to what caused and fueled the American Civil War. Slavery was indeed one of them. However, less than 20% of the Southern population owned African Americans. It was a major investment to own an African American especially if they possessed valuable skills such as blacksmithing, carpentry, or farming skills. Certainly owning a black man or woman, was a prestigious classification, but very few Southerners and even Northerners, fit in this category of wealth. Thus, the stories that have been perpetuated throughout history of all slave owners beating their "slaves" is quite inaccurate. It is a myth that the media of that time stimulated to build a case to send the North and South to war. In addition, politicians, many of them wealthy and slave-owners, were used as the example or model for the Southern population, when in fact the average Southerner lived day to day and could not afford to purchase another human being for $500-$1,500 .
In addition, while many people have been taught that Southerners were the only ones who did not like African Americans in the United States, Northern sentiment was equally if not more harsh toward African Americans. Blacks were beaten and even killed in city streets of New York City, New York, 9toward dissolvement in the mid to late 1800's, but it was the American Civil War which sped up the abolishment.
