Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

Obviously, "mutt" is something of an endearing term. Obama's used that before. "Mongrel" is derogatory but Obama gets a pass. Not sure if that's because he's Obama or because he's describing his own heritage. (Did you notice how quick Whoopie was to support him?). I certainly hope it's a word that we can now drop out of the lexicon unless we are talking about dogs. Now, while Bush would have been skewered if he'd used the term to describe blacks, he'd probably not have raised an eyebrow if he'd been talking about his own ancestry - except maybe he'd appear to be in denial of his father's upper crust East Coast roots. Anyway, this just goes down in my book as another unclassy move by an Emperor with no clothes. |

I'm not aware of any country on the planet whose inhabitants haven't been raped and enslaved by another race or group at one point. The Germans were mentioned earlier as an exemption - but first you'd need to define "Germans." Present day Germans? No - they've never been enslaved just as present day Americans haven't. Go back far enough though, and you have barbarians swooping in and claiming the land from one group, then Romans swooping in and taking it from the barbarians, and so on. It's the story of every nation and every group. Eastern Germans have for hundreds of years been either German or Polish depending on who was winning the conflict. Look at Romania and Vlad protecting his land from the Ottomans swooping in to rape and enslave his people. It's the story of history, nobody's exempt, and the idea of a "pure" race is ridiculous. I'm still bitter that on any government form the only option I have for honoring my heritage is "white" or "caucasian" - neither of which apply. I have a friend from Zimbabwe who lives here in the states now. I referred to her as "African American" when she became a citizen, and one of my black friends was somewhat insulted to meet her and find out she was white. I told him flat out that she was more African than he was. She could at least trace her lineage back several generations in Africa. |

Something everybody seems to be forgetting. First, Obama's background is very different from the average "African-American". His black ancestry is not the same as those descended from slavery. His forefathers weren't slaves. His father didn't go through the racial prejudices others did, and Obama himself spent much of his formative years in other countries or in Hawaii, far from the racial issues that were being dealt with by the typical "African-American", and even his time in the continental US, he was raised by his white grandmother. When considering his statements about race, his background should be considered. Especially considering the passionate racism held towards "African-Americans by those that are directly from Africa. Second, while yes, there were slave owners that abused their slaves (including rape and murder), that was not true of the whole institution. There have been several studies showing that on the whole, most slaves were treated fairly well (not withstanding the inherent wrongness of slavery to begin with). The argument that most "African-Americans" are descended from rape by white slave owners just doesn't wash. Third, you want to see posts made by liberal members of the fora that insinuate or flat out call Bush a racist? Look no further than the threads re: Katrina. |

Not to mention that the percentage of slave owners in the South was something like 1%? It wasn't widely practiced, and wasn't widely accepted - just to further LsD's point. |

Definitely no more than 3%, which kinda gives lie to slavery being the primary reason for the Civil War. Don't forget, 11% of blacks in the South were free, and some of those owned slaves along with some slave ownership in the Indian tribes. |

Slavery was an important cause of the Civil War. Not the only cause, but it was pretty important. Take a look at Randall and Donald, "Civil War and Reconstruction." In 1860 over 40% of southern families owned slaves. Thousands of land owners owned 50 or more slaves. 95% of the African American population was in southern states. There was a huge concern in the south about the social and economic consequences of mass emancipation. A lot of people in the north think slavery was the only cause. A lot of people in the south think slavery was not the cause. The truth is, it's somewhere in the middle. As far as the white knight comment, you can shove it. I don't need to explain myself to you. |

I bet you wouldn't have to go back too far in the family tree to find slaves, slave owners, rapists and the raped. Africa was a pretty wild place back then...well, still is really. And, we are going to need some sources to determine if the 1-3% slaveowners in the antebellum south is accurate or if the 40% is accurate. I doubt we can agree to split the difference. |
