So. Jodi Junior made the drumline (2nd snare) at the high school he is attending while we are in Colorado. The marching band at this high school is very competitive - they have a lot of state championships under their belts. They seem like a good group of kids - highly motivated, serious and dedicated - but the drumline kids have this tradition, apparently, of shaving their heads (or close to it - very short buzz cuts with the clippers) that they all do to each other one of the days during band camp. They informed Jodi Jr. of this a couple of days ago, and he is absolutely DEAD SET against shaving his hair off. He told his section leader on the phone today that he would get it cut shorter than it is now (it's not long, but it does cover his ears), but he was NOT going to get a buzz cut. This was met by a moment of silence by the section leader, and then he tried again to convince him. Told him he should come to the thing anyway, and just watch, and maybe he would change his mind.

When I first heard this, I said, well, it's only hair, and it will grow back, but Mr. Jodi said no way, if he doesn't want to get his hair cut he doesn't have to - so I have now also told him this. I guess it's seen as a right of passage to these kids who work so hard to be part of this thing. So they don't quite understand why Jodi Jr. doesn't want to do it. Or something. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully it will all work out ok.

I just remember when I was in high school, there was this girls synchronized swimming team that was really popular, you had to try out, and it was hard to get into. But part of the deal was that the new members had to go through initiation - got "made up" by the old members, they had to wear these ridiculous outfits and hideous make-up and hair styles all day to school, and at the end of the day, they had to "swim" down senior hall on the floor with all the kids lined on either side making fun of them. One of my classmates made the team, but had to quit because she refused to do the initiation. That kind of thing would never fly today, though obviously remnants still exist.

Belonging to a group is a weird dynamic - I'm the type that gets so much affirmation from such a ritual that I'd probably love it. Feeling accepted in kind of a "martial" kind of way. Wonder what the girls on the drum line - if there are any - would be expected to do?

Anyway, I applaud him for not feeling the need to seek that kind of affirmation. In the adverse, if it was an embarrassing hazing ritual like the swim team you describe above, I'd probably refuse to even go out for the team. I think that tells you something about my self-esteem back then.

Now a days, I have a bit more self-esteem and a lot more "couldn't care less". I wear house slippers to the store in the cold months.

I've walked through the middle of the shopping district of my hometown in a tu-tu twice as part of a hazing ritual.

Ok, so only once was for the hazing ritual.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

You never know, nowadays.

But....down here, the drumline is the coolest part of the band. Kids fight to get on a drumline.

I applaud the principled stand your son has taken...but if those two gals end up with a buzzcut and he doesn't, it's going to be a long, long year...

The other time was just for fun? :D

See... this is what happens when you don't tell the whole story. All kinds of things race thru our heads.

On the off chance that the 2nd time was for fun, at least tell me you didn't like it. :D
