If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
This is going to hurt 'The Most Ethical Congress Ever', and that's over and above the fact that they tried to strike a deal to get around it.

Rangel to Stand Trial Before House Panel in Ethics Case

Representative Charles B. Rangel will stand public trial on
13 counts of violating House rules, after the veteran
congressman failed to reach a settlement to avoid the rare
and potentially embarrassing proceeding.

Members of the House ethics committee detailed on Thursday
the numerous charges against Mr. Rangel, a Democrat from
Harlem, including multiple breaches of the House ban on
accepting gifts of more than $50 and of the requirement that
members act at all times in a way that reflects creditably on
the House.

Committee members struck a somber but determined tone in
their brief public meeting, expressing affection for Mr.
Rangel while at the same time saying they need to uphold the
integrity of Congress, especially given its dismal standing
with the public.

Years and years ago, I was waiting for a quiet, mid-morning flight from LGA to ORD. Being type A and with upgrade in hand, I'm waiting right at the gate even though they haven't started boarding yet.

Up comes Rangel, with some assistant, maybe a driver/security guy. He (security guy) steps right in front of me while uttering the words 'first class'. He was basically holding Rangels place in line, while Rangel sat comfortably. The guy didn't board the flight with him (this was back when a non-flying passenger could get through security).

First class, my ass.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Shock: A slap on the wrist

The House ethics investigatory subcommittee recommended that Rep. Charlie Rangel be reprimanded, which is the least severe punishment, according to a new report.

The disclosure was made today by Rep. Gene Green (D-Texas), who is the panel's chairman.

A reprimand falls below expulsion and censure on the list of available punishments.
...
It found after an exhaustive two-year investigation that Rangel had a "pattern of indifference or disregard for the laws, rules and regulations of the United States and the House of Representatives."

In one of its harshest allegations, the panel found "substantial reason" to believe Rangel broke rules by soliciting corporations and foundations with business before Congress for large contributions to the Charles Rangel Center for Public Service at CCNY -- a story The Post broke in 2007.

Is this one of those things were the congress gets to police themselves? So, Rangel can thank the stars his timing was fortunate.

However, you can bet there will be leaks and this is going to be an overall net drain on the Democrats in November.
