This is what's wrong; with Gov't assistance

My wiffe and I are looking for a nanny to help with our kids 3 afternoons a week.

So we get a lot of applicants, one is a very noce woman who asks to be paid "under the table". When I asked why she said she collects SSDI from being bipolar, and she can't "show" much income or else she loses the Social Security. BTW my wife and I can deduct $6,000/year on our taxes from childcare.

This angers me because this woman is obviously not too disabled to work, and while she's "on the dole" she wants to make more $$ at the same time cheating the system out of revenue for soc. security since we would not be paying fedral taxes or soc. security on her income. Doesn't she realize it's this very process that provides for her SSDI benefits?

Sometimes I think that one of the things that's wrong with our society today is that people narrow their view to only help themselves or take advantage of a system out of laziness. :veryangry:

I don't think this is what's wrong with govermnent assistance as much as what's wrong with people. She's trying to break the law.

Gov't assistance by itself is not wrong; the abuse of it is. There are laws on the book to guard against this sort of abuse. By your inaction, you're essentially acquiescing to this woman's abuse of gov't assistance. Venting against gov't assistance in general is just shifting responsibility.

Man up, you can always insist on doing all monetary transactions above board and/or reporting her to the IRS.

1. You need a bipolar nanny like a pig needs pockets

2. If you don't want to pay her under the table, hire someone else. OTOH, see #1, above.

3. Make sure you pay workers comp insurance if you ever intend to run for office

and

4. Make sure your homeowners insurance covers whomever you hire.

I'd be more concerned with the notion of having someone who is bipolar taking care of my kids than I would how she wanted to be paid.

Bipolar is a very broad term and when under control can be pretty much a non-issue, however if it's been serious enough for her to be able to claim disability benefits you'd probably want some more information.

A disabled person drawing SS can make somewhere around $800/month without it effecting their benefits.

Gov't assistance by itself is not wrong; the abuse of it is.
But if the abuse cannot be prevented in an effective, proportional (e.g. without becoming a surveillance society) manner then there is something wrong with it.

So you would hire her to care for your children if she met what criteria?

Me? I would never knowingly put my child in the hands of folks with mental/emotional issues for any reason.

The original question - is there something wrong with governmental assistance?

Yes, here we have someone that can work but has figured out how to get a check for doing jack sh!t.

There will always be abuses. We can't afford a system that would prevent them. Which is the same reason I oppose Obama's window dressing bill to cut waste through yet more audits. I don't believe it will work. You want to cut waste? Cut budgets.

Aside from the Bipolar issue, it would be possible to make an arrangement where you pay her up to $6000.00 on the books, so you can claim the deduction, and the rest off the books, so she doesn't go over the SS limit for income - if that's possible.

Not saying i would do that, but it's a possible option.

I think your critique of the gvt. assistance is sound Free Rider.
The fact is, this woman most likely shouldn't qualify for SSI - yet she does. If she's bipolar to the point that she's too unstable to maintain a job, she certainly shouldn't be out trying to pick up a job watching your two beautiful children.

My first day of dialysis treatment 8 years ago, I walked into the clinic and they had my SSI paperwork all filled out for me and ready to go. As they got me hooked up to the machine and had me signing various documents they sort of slipped that one in. I explained to the social worker that I had no intention to stop working. She seemed surprised and let me know that 75% of the people in my age group couldn't work and do dialysis. I told her flat out that the reason was because they came into the clinic with their SSI paperwork already filled out and ready to go - unless they were paying attention, what hope or chance would they have?
I made it my goal whether in, or out of the hospital, to be able to work while on dialysis. Eventually that meant treating myself at home to give me the freedom to make my own schedule. I never let the illness dictate what I was and wasn't able to do in terms of providing for my wife and I. The other young people I knew on dialysis at the time were happy to have subsidized housing, SSI checks, food stamps, and basically sat around playing xbox all day in their Boulder condos. They thought I was crazy - I still think they're crazy.

If you're receiving gvt. assistance of any sort, you should have to check in weekly, if not bi-weekly with some sort of social worker to keep tabs on what and how you're doing. Nobody should be able to just work off the books and steal money from other Americans because they see themselves as deserving. It's a slap in the face to anyone who genuinely qualifies for such benefits and chooses to keep plugging away out of a sense of honor and integrity.

I wouldn't my kids in the care of a stranger with mental/emotional issues. Plenty of people have mental/emotional issues - there's probably a few that post here, and plenty of them raise kids with little or no problem.

Mental health is unfortunately a taboo - there's a danger of creating new niggers out of people with mental issues, if you'll excuse the horrible term.

That's right Kincaid...here we have a person who is capable of working...whose bipolar condition is under control...and she's taking the easy way out. That bothers me.

Maybe the thread title should read, "This is what's wrong with being lazy"

Either way we're not hiring her.

FR - funny, when we hired a part time nanny (also 3 days per wk), we also insisted that it be above board and legal. I should add that of the dozens or hundreds of people I know with child care help, I know of only one other family that does it legally above board. The reason most do it under the table is they couldn't be bothered figuring out all the red rape required to hire someone, plus the extra expense of taxes.

We made it a requirement largely for liability reasons. If an under-the-table nanny slips and falls on your stairs, no insurance will cover it - you could find yourself personally paying disability and workmans comp for this person.

In our case our nanny is a citizen so it's not a big deal for her, and we pay $2 over the standard rate ($17 instead of $15 per hr) to make up for the tax hit she has.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

When it comes to any kids I'm responsible for, someone else can experiment with the finer points of the woman's condition.

A person on SS disability, can earn up to $980 in substantial gainful activity without jeopardizing his SS benefit. This is not to be confused with SSI which is a strictly needs based program for people who have not worked enough to qualify for disability insurance. Social Security allows a person on SS disability a 9 month trial period of unlimited work in an effort to encourage people to try to ease back into the work force. No doubt, this is in effort to help overcome the statistical reality that once a person has been unemployed for a two year period, the likelihood of reemployment is practically nil. I think the system is pragmatic and humane.

There will always be dishonest people who try to take advantage, whether it's Social Security or sub-prime mortgage scams.
