Jolly - 40 miles is what the volt can do with electric only. I don't count electric charge as mpg - gas converted to electric is different, as it's still using "gallons" of gas, but I think it's unfair to base mpg on what the car can do with its batteries. By that logic, I can drive to the top of Trail Ridge (highest continuous road in the world) and just coast for 15 miles back down to town burning 1/10 a gallon of gas, but I can't fairly say my Tacoma gets 150 mpg.

It's like saying a Prius gets 60 mpg, which it simply doesn't. If you're mentioning miles per gallon, then it should only refer to miles driven while you're burning gas.
I don't agree with that, the whole point is to communicate to the buyer something about relative fuel consumption, ignoring the EV component makes no sense.

Having said that, it's pretty clear mpg is not a very useful metric for EVs.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

No, seems like Volts per Mile or Watts/Hour or some measurement of the capacity of the battery would be more useful. For now, miles/charge (i.e. range) might be the best we get.

It's still not fair to use the measurement of miles per "gallon" if we're including in that figure a component not using any gasoline - it makes the gas component look awesome when it isn't.

Volts per mile is absurd, indeed meaningless. kWH per mile (or per hundred miles) is probably the best way to relate the electric consumption to the average consumer.

A "gallon" is something the average consumer can "see" and "feel" -- just give him a gallon milk jug.

A "kWH" is a lot more abstract to most consumers. Lots of folks cannot grasp how much power a 60W light bulb consumes (and the energy saving light bulbs' labelings will just add more confusion), let alone the "kWH" concept.

The food industry has been trying to communicate with consumers using "calories," and still not many understand what that means.

There's got to be a better way to convey this to the masses. May be in terms of "the energy equivalent to how many times you lift a gallon of water off the ground by 1 ft."

True, just doubting whether most folks understand their electricity bills any better than they understand their food labels.

Another thing....GM is going to have a 36 month lease on the Volt coming in at $350/month, which ought to make it more attractive to a lot of folks.
How does this work?

2500 plus (4200 times 3) = $15,100

41 minus 15 = 26

How is a used electric car after 3 years more rapid technological development ever gonna be worth 26k on the aftermarket?

Who is eating the predictable massive loss on these "move'em out the door" leases?

The Watt has always been used in this country as the unit of electrical power. I guess Horse Power just didn't make a whole lot of sense in that application.

But a Watt is defined as the rate at which work is done when an object's velocity is held constant at one meter ( )per second against constant opposing force of one newton. ;)

Americans should measure energy in Flux instead, whereby 1 Flux = 1.21 Jiggawatts. That would be a unit of energy worthy of a world superpower!

1.21 Jigawatts?

Holy cow, the Swedes would have to burn 17,697,940,000 rabbits to produce 1 Flux!
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
