Well, so it's somewhere in between the Leaf, Coda at the lower end, and the Tesla, Karma at the high end. I hope it does well - I'm all for it, I just hope people realize that an electric car is still powered by volatile organic compounds. |

I think if I had one for my commute I'd have to carry around a gallon can of gas in the trunk. I might not need any for months on my 30 mile round trip, so every month I could put the old gas in the mower or other car and get some fresh gas in the can. I'd be concerned about letting the gas in the Volt's tank sit for months on end. |

...on electricity alone. After that, the gas engine (which uses a fuel tank that holds 8 gal) drives a generator - to give you another 300 miles : about 50 mpg is what they claim. |

Use STABIL. Once treated, gas is good for months. The Feds are having a heckuva time coming up with mileage figures for the Volt. When the gas engine is running, it's pretty simple - 50mpg on the highway. But most of the time on an average commute, the gas engine will never run. |

As well you should... While this isn't usually a concern for most people who drive because they generally use the gas in the tank in a couples of weeks, it's been a BIG concern for boaters for several years now. Gas can sit in boat gas tanks for months, particularly in winter months. The ethanol in the gas attracts moisture, which can cause all kinds of engine issues. I just got my boat out of the shop for ethanol related issues. And I used a long term fuel stabilizer over the winter. Still had clogged carburetors this spring. The other issue is mixing ethanol and non-ethanol gas. Over a short period of time, it can interact and cause a gummy mess in a fuel system, clogging filters and tiny passages in the carburetors themselves. While most cars these days have fuel injectors, ethanol's ability to attract moisture can cause issues there too. |

Another thing....GM is going to have a 36 month lease on the Volt coming in at $350/month, which ought to make it more attractive to a lot of folks. |

It would be interesting to sit down and pencil out the cost factors of a lease - if not using fuel pencils out to an overall savings, may not be a bad idea. Especially if you signed your lease and gas prices began to spike to $4/gal or more. |

Let that gas sit in the tank for a few months and the engine repair bill may wipe out any fuel savings that are realized. |

In all seriousness, why would I pay 41K for this when I could buy a new Civic Hybrid or Toyota Prius for basically half that and get better mileage? |

You can't get better mileage. If the EPA lists the mileage as GM has calculated, no Civic can touch 200mpg. Not even Kenny's hybrid.

Right - buy a Toyota Echo and get 45 mpg at about a third the price. Or build a DIY electric car with about the same range for a few thousand, and spend the rest to remodel your kitchen, thus doubling or tripling your money when you sell your house. 40 mile range would just barely get me to work - it would have to charge all day to be able to drive home in the evening. |

True... I saw the 50 mpg and thought that was the estimate. Still... 41K??? Pretty pricey. I can buy 2 Civic hybrids for that and I get 55 mpg. And no increase in my electric bill. Wonder what it costs per charge in electricity? |

Silly! With two Civic hybrids you'll get 110 mpg! Do the math. Better yet, get four Hyundai Accents. I think that might be good for 140 mpg. Edited by Kincaid, Jul 28 2010, 01:51 PM.

Jolly - 40 miles is what the volt can do with electric only. I don't count electric charge as mpg - gas converted to electric is different, as it's still using "gallons" of gas, but I think it's unfair to base mpg on what the car can do with its batteries. By that logic, I can drive to the top of Trail Ridge (highest continuous road in the world) and just coast for 15 miles back down to town burning 1/10 a gallon of gas, but I can't fairly say my Tacoma gets 150 mpg. It's like saying a Prius gets 60 mpg, which it simply doesn't. If you're mentioning miles per gallon, then it should only refer to miles driven while you're burning gas. |

I think they should exempt it, like they do with diesel trucks. Besides, we all know the Volt will run simply on the smugness of the owners. |

Thanks George... these were the numbers I was interested in, i.e. pay back. Didn't this same discussion occur during the Civic Hybrid vs regular Civic? Then, the price difference was only about $2500. The hybrid's didn't exactly corner the market. Same thing here. Early adopters and tree huggers will buy it, but the average Joe? I think not.
I'm pretty sure the battery won't last 20 years. |

I'm all for electric, but only if I can do it on the way-cheap, given the hefty compromises you have to accept in driving one. I'd create a commuter car and build a "Voltswagon" if it had the range to get me to and from work. They just don't yet. And cut the range of any electric car about in half if your'e going up a lot of hills. The Karma at least can recharge itself over a 10 mile down hill trek, but the Karma will run $80k - if it ever comes to market. They won't even blab about the powertrain, so we dont' even know what powers the thing. I think the volt will fail, if for no other reason than it will be the first electric. The Coda or the Leaf who are getting less exposure (the leaf is actually available, so it was first I guess) may win out. It's sort of like the Honda Insight - remember that ugly Blade Runner looking thing? |

On a carbon footprint basis ... how much CO2 is generated to power the Volt per mile, how much CO2 is generated to power the Prius/Civic Hybrid per mile?
