Hey, anyone interested in hearing some decent teen musicians on August 1st? Well, it helps if you live in SE Virginia.

Sundays at Four

I have no personal interest here. None at all. :lol2:

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I thought it odd that P*D was going to see Hannah Montana. I should have known.

Well, PD, if you go, shake it don't break it. (The 'don't break it' is no longer figuratively speaking)

RIGHT???

I hadn't thought of that. I tend not to record these sorts of things. I dunno, maybe its a bit tacky to have your camera set up in the middle of things.

He's playing four things, about 15 minutes total. Three of them have already been taped (and posted).

Here's the list.

1. Prelude from the Suite Pour le Piano, by Debussy
2. The White Peacock, from The Roman Sketches by Charles Tomlinson Griffes
3. Toccata from the Suite Pour le Piano, by Debussy
4. Prelude no. 1 by Gershwin

He is using the White Peacock essentially as a slow movement between the first and third components of the Suite Pour le Piano. He hasn't quite mastered the Sarabande from that piece. In any case, it's neat to package an American impressionist piece in between the two virtuosic movements of Griffes' muse's work. And then the Gershwin will be sort of like a pre-packaged little encore.

Love to have met you there, but it's quite a schlep from Charleston! :D

As Mik said, so how is Charleston?

Update:

We went to the venue to try the piano. Oh, my, .... ouch. Pity the poor pianist, always having to adapt. That's life.

He'll make do. You have to learn to do your best on whatever instrument is available. That's just a part of musicianship. But he'll have to work pretty hard to achieve any dynamics or to produce any delicate touch work on this machine.

For Mik, and the other piano types among you, the piano is a Schumann. If only it were a well-maintained original Schumann from early 20th century Chicago. Unfortunately, it's a Chinese Schumann. Chinese pianos have come a long way, I know, but this one is from a very early vintage out of Chinese factories. This was when they were apparently learning from scratch about how to make a piano.

I have never felt a piano action like this. Gluelike or sludge are pretty appropriate terms. There is absolutely no way to play pianissimo or even piano. Mezzo forte is probably about as quiet as you can go and also maintain decent rhythmic control. Needless to say, his dynamics will be compressed. The church is very live, with lots of reverb, and that may help him a bit. It'll have a big bright sound, and that may cover some sins of piano engineering.

Oh well, if he manages to get invited back, he'll play on a 7' Kawai at a different venue.

Well, as I just posted, I found out I didn't get into grad school today. Bad idea to read it on the way to a job interview, although I told them I could now be considered for the full time position. The program director said it was my low GRE and GPA. My GPA is .6 from the required one (3.0). So, I can take a class or two and get A's to up it. I knew my GRE scores were horrible, but I can study even more and retake it.

The only place around here that even let me apply to their writing program as a non-degree student only allowed me to send in my college transcripts. The rejection really pissed me off, because it's such a bullsh!t process. I graduated college about six ****ing years ago. Since then I've been everything from a fellowship researcher to a trash man so I think it's fairly safe to say my grades back then are no longer a clear indicator of anything. Especially since my degree is in an entirely unrelated field. No writing sample, no reference letters, no resume, no freaking personal statement. They rejected my application because of some unrelated sh!t I did half a decade ago. Bullsh!t.

But you're right about the GREs. I believe that if you get scores up high enough they can trump any grades you have on your transcripts.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I think the GREs are bullsh!t. I got my undergrad degree in music, not f'ing math or analogies. So stupid. I even want an Arts Management degree. Arts, not math or English. I'm even pretty good in English, just not in some obscure vocab and some analogies. Bullsh!t. It's just Bull.

Aqua, that sucks! At least I got to send in all that other stuff.

Yeah. I just took it in June and don't have $150 to take it again yet. I think I took the SATs twice. I'm not really surprised I didn't get in because of the GREs, just mad that that's probably the only reason. I think if only the GPA mattered, I'd have be accepted.
And how are you today?
