Tattoo Designs; ... Which do you prefer

I've mentioned that I'm trying to get Kat Von D. on LA Ink to do a tattoo for me in memoriam for my kidney donor - who was an amazing young lady.

I've designed two possibilities right now (neither is finalized - both would still incorporate a thin green vine wrapping around the ring in each design, with some small leaves on it). Both have significant meaning for me both in terms of their mathematical and spiritual meanings.

Without getting in to the design components or meaning behind the various elements - which do you like better as a design?

The other obvious option is one I just whipped together showing how to solve for the ratio between angles "A" and "B" rather than the hypotenuse when a drunk Indian offers you a nearly perfect right triangle after he passes out and falls over.

Kat Von D's pretty ridiculous with her talent, that's for sure. I've been interested in her stuff way back when she was still on Miami Ink. Portrait tats are often a very risky endeavor but hers are just plain breathtaking.

Which leads me to ask this: how's come you'd want her for this project? I don't even want to imagine what she charges, and this seems like a fairly basic design; I'm sure the dude running your local tat shop could do it for less? (Unless of course you'd also be asking for creative input from the artist, in which case I'd say go for it. The better tattoo artists can take a simple idea like that and snazzy up the hell out of it.)

ANYways, I like the first one, def.

I don't know why, but I prefer A to B. Lighter perhaps.

BTW, what is that blue stuff in the glass?

Looks like Hypnotiq, but since it probably played a big part in how he ended up like that I'd rather not know.

AL: My main focus with wanting Kat Von D. to do it is 1) being immunosuppressed I need to be careful about where I do it, and who does it. I figure the best should be pretty safe. Secondly, for me it's more about the opportunity to have a platform on national TV to speak (even if briefly) about organ donation and the life changing experience it is for the recipient. It's all an effort o increase awareness for organ donation.
I would also love to see what she'd do with it personally if she was up for putting her own flair on it - she's an amazing artist.
It's a very simple design - but I'm amazed at how poor the quality is on some of the work I see - I really want something sharp and clear/even.

Ah, word. All good points. Like I said I'd def. go with the first one, and I think if you allow yourself to be flexible about the details I think you could get something seriously kickass from it. Where would it be on your body?

Jolly - My one fear with the Borromean Rings is that they may be mistaken for the biohazard symbol which comes from them.

KB - without looking at responses yet in this thread, I think both are cool but I'd pick A simply because I haven't seen it before and it seems quite unique. I feel like I've seen B before, or something similar. Both are great though.

89th: The triquetra seen in "B" is a well known Christian and neo-pagan symbol.
The borromean rings just happen to create a triquetra when you shade them the right way as I have in "A".

Jolly: The borromean rings aren't the biohazard symbol - it's the other way around old friend, but I'm sure you know that since the borromean rings date to well before humans became interested in biohazards and their warnings. :)

For those not aware: Borromean rings or borromean shapes in general (Germans often used borromean triangles) are three interlocked shapes which when one is removed, fall apart. So removing any ring causes the other two to become unlinked. The three rings have their own meaning, as do their overlapping sections in the middle making up the triquetra (the part that looks like three icthus fish connected together). The red ring in both is an addition and not part of the borromean rings or the triquetra, but something to symbolize the unification of the three parts made up in the triquetra.

The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. I would chose A. I like that it is a bit more delicate, and since your donor was a woman, that seems appropriate. The overall shape is softer as well.

B did remind me right off of some kind of symbol for something bad - maybe it is just the colors, which also, because they are so bold, leave a taste of fascism in my mouth.

P.S. I also like how A is inverted compared to B, and the center sphere on A then kind of looks like a world with the equator around the middle.

Kincaid: Good observations - thanks. The "globe" effect you mention wasn't on purpose, but after I began designing it I noticed it and liked it - the donor was a volleyball player so I thought it fitting - it sort of looks like a volleyball.

I'm the wrong guy to ask. Actually, we're all the wrong guy to ask. I'd never deign to help someone decide on a permanent alteration to their body.

That said, I am available for relationship counseling so long as you agree to follow my commands advice to the letter. I can run anyone else's life better. It's my own that gives me fits.

I'd go for A too - I had exactly the same reaction as Kincaid to the other design - it looked like something they'd use in a sci-fi movie as the logo for something fascist.

Mik: I like both designs, so I'm getting ideas from people who don't really "know" me to speak about which they think looks better, more cohesive, whatever.
The meaningful part of it for me isn't how it looks, so I'm not really concerned with letting the group-think dictate which I choose, and I'm not concerned with it looking good when I'm old.

Again - not too concerned with how it will look when I'm 80, because let's face it, the odds of me hitting 80 are pretty low - and really, how many old people look awesome naked?

I said "naked" Mik - George is picking on tattoos, but the reality is that pretty much everything he sees is gross.
