Extending unemployment benefits ...; 99 weeks

Article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/21/unemployment-extension-re_n_654083.html

1. Should unemployment benefits get extended, again? (I believe it'll be up to 99 weeks, assuming this latest attempt to extend it passes.) Why or why not?

2. (This question would not apply if you say "no" to question 1 above.) Assuming you believe the unemployment benefits should be extended, do you still believe the GOP has good reason(s) to block it?

The GOP's argument is that while they also want to extend unemployment benefit, they want to do so by cutting spending elsewhere to pay for this extension (instead of increasing the deficit to finance the extension). I have trouble finding what spending the GOP propose to cut, specifically, to finance the extension ... may be the mainstream media are just not doing a fair/good job reporting the GOP's position. Would appreciate any pointer that illuminates what spending the GOP propose to cut to finance the unemployment benefits that they say they, too, want to extend.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

That reminds me - in response to this I saw this yesterday on a friend's facebook page:

Obviously I had to skitch it and send a screenshot off to failbook.com. When did unemployment stop being "assistance?"

If she doesn't consider unemployment payments "assistance," I'd very much like to hear her definition.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Assistance is when you raid your mom's social security check.

Assistance is when you don't have to raid your mom's social security check sock drawer for drug money because she offers some up freely hoping you'll pay your rent with it.
FIFY?

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Finally
I've been told that in Denmark, if you're unemployed, the government will provide benefits indefinitely. However, after six weeks (I may be wrong), if you haven't found work, they will put you to work doing something, anything, so that you earn your keep for the time you can't find the job "you want."

Can someone confirm that?

Oh, yeah, I got a "Discover Card" banner ad.

The economy has been improving for the last three quarters, in that the GDP has been growing in the last three quarters.

If you want to say "... until employment rate improves," then that's a different story.

My unemployment benefit is taking my son to the park every single morning and putting him to bed every night.

That beats $400 a week from New York State any day.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I think that's more or less true.

When you are laid off in Denmark you continue to get almost 100% of your salary, but the government will usually get you a new job very quickly.

I think one factor why this works relatively well is

a) the unemployment rate is very low
b) people are willing to take jobs "below" their formal education, since the salaries don't differ very much. An engineer does not earn much more than, say, a craftsman.

I would be all for this except it would do nothing but grow the government.

It would be much better use of the money by the government to offer business grants or loans.

Rather than give five people 30-40k each over 99 weeks, give me $150K, and by the end of the year I'll be employing 8-9 people making well over the unemployment rate, and on a long term basis. Not to mention circulating more money through the economy.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Commendable, Luke's Dad.

Have you shopped your business plan around for that $150k loan/grant? Approached the SBA maybe? Any elements of your business plan that you would like to share, either here or via PM, to promote it and see if you can get any lead to bag that $150k business grant or loan?

Speaking of which, there is a bill on expanding business loans/grants pending in the Senate ...

WASHINGTON — Perhaps the last best hope of Democrats to pass legislation aimed at creating jobs before the November elections seemed to be crumbling in the Senate on Wednesday as Republicans signaled that they would block a bill to expand government lending programs and grant an array of tax breaks to small businesses.

That's funny, I was just filing old emails into folders and came across that. That wouldn't take $150,000. That would just take around 15k.
