Coffee from cat droppings clean enough for Muslims

Indonesia's top Islamic body declared Tuesday that Muslims can drink civet coffee _ the world's most expensive coffee, which is extracted from the dung of civet cats.
A preacher recently suggested the beverage might not be "halal" _ or religiously approved _ because its unusual provenance makes it unclean. But after a long discussion Tuesday, the influential Indonesian Ulema Council said that the coffee, known locally as Kopi Luwak, could be consumed as long as the beans were washed.
Kopi Luwak, which takes it name from the Indonesian word for civets, is made from hard beans that have been eaten by the nocturnal critters and then fermented in their stomachs before being pooped out and roasted. Civet cats are mongoose-like animals.
It's highly prized for its smooth flavor and bitterless aftertaste, sometimes fetching well over $200 a pound ($440 per kilogram) online.
"Kopi Luwak can be declared 'halal' after passing through a washing process," said Maruf Amien, acting head of the council. "Producing, selling and drinking it is allowed."
In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, Kopi Luwak is produced in the main Java island, Sumatra and Sulawesi. It is also found under different names elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Only 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms) are said to be produced annually worldwide.
The Ulema Council has often issued fatwas, or edicts, including several controversial rulings against smoking and yoga. Its edicts are not legally binding, but many devout Muslims abide by them.

Two comments:
1) It appears you can clean a turd. Mythbusters already showed how to polish one, now we know you can clean one.
2) Now Hubby wants to figure out a way to sell the droppings the deer leave all over our backyard. :lol2:

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Ah, scat cat coffee!
:lol2:

Ever had any, PD? Hubby says he has seen it for sale at some coffee bean websites. I'm really glad it's expensive, too expensive for hubby to buy.

Actually, no. I generally avoid foods that have passed through the digestive tract of other animals! Just a quirk, I guess. :whome:

I'll paraphrase that for you, PD: "Ewwwwwwwww!"

(BTW, I have to agree with your assessment.)

Don't knock it 'till you've tried it.

Known as Kopi Luwak in Indonesia, the coffee is excellent! I have some at home, from a visit to Java (Jakarta and Yojakarta) earlier this year. Very expensive outside of Indonesia ($400.00 US a lb.) It is priced quite reasonably inside the country.

The exotic nature of the coffee is that the civet's digestive system removes the husk and flesh from the coffee bean, but leaves the bean intact. The beans are then defecated by the mammal, picked, cleaned and roasted by harvesters, then packaged and sold. It is claimed digestion takes away much of the bitterness from the coffee, and the beans are quite safe when washed and roasted.

I can attest that the result is an extremely smooth, delicious coffee when it's ground and brewed.

Being a total and utter coffee snob I still have little desire to try this coffee. I find it hard to believe it's 40 times better than the Kaladi bros. beans I get here in Denver.

Over the past couple weeks I've tried (with little success) to come up with a good-tasting coffee-tea hybrid. I'm just trying to get rid of some of the old crap in my pantry all together but I mean c'mon, this isn't a stupid idea, they're both infusions and the tastes are similar.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I like them both, and have had coffee, green tea and iced black tea today. But I don't find them similar in taste at all.

Bitter black tea has a lot more in common with coffee than, say, a fuji apple or spearmint.

KB: We use a Chemex coffee maker at our home. Hubby loves to experiment with various coffee makers, and this is our latest one. It does a good job.

brenda: I really love Chemex, and I love Toddy - it's a cold press coffee which reduces acidity in the coffee by about 65% - so it makes VERY smooth coffee that's cold. You simply add hot water (it's concentrated) for a hot cup of coffee, or mix with water/milk/whatever for cold drinks. So full and smooth though.

Hmmmm, never heard of the Toddy before. Will have to check into that one. Always looking for ideas for hubby-gifts. Danke sehr!

I normally just brew it, and tell everyone after what it is :D

Usually, the lead in to the conversation is from guests - something to the effect of "my God, that coffee is some good - what is it?"

Hasn't your bloody country abused tea enough?

If you want to mix coffee with something, mix it with bloody whiskey. Leave the tea alone.
