Antarctic cold snap kills nine in Argentina
Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, has seen snow for the first time in 89 years, as a cold snap continues to grip several South American nations.

A spell of extreme cold weather has brought ice and snow to much of Argentina, killing at least nine.

Most of the victims were homeless people in the capital Buenos Aires who died of hypothermia, a local non-governmental organisation said.

The cold front moving up from Antarctica has caused temperatures to plunge across the southern cone region of South America.

Deaths have also been reported in Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia.

"The wave of cold air from the polar region continues to affect all of Argentina's territory with intense frosts" Argentina's national meteorological service reported.

It recorded minimum temperatures of minus 14C in Patagonia and central Argentina and between 0C and 3C in the north.

Argentina has stepped up electricity imports from Brazil and put restrictions on the use of natural gas by industry to ensure the increased energy demand for domestic heating can be met.

The cold snap also hit Bolivia, where local media reported at least two deaths in the tropical region of Santa Cruz.

Bolivia's education ministry ordered schools to close until 21 July because of the cold.

Low temperatures have also affected Chile, southern Brazil, and eastern Peru.

The unusually cold winter weather in South America follows one of the coldest winters for years in many parts of the northern hemisphere.

It´s freaking COLD here. I know I´ve said this before, but the houses are all so open, no insulation, designed for extremely hot weather, so all it takes is temps in the 40s to make it feel freezing. The past couple days it´s been raining, so now everything is damp, and all my shoes, socks, jackets. . . nothing will dry. You have to sleep with as much clothing as you can fit on your body, and with hat, gloves, etc.

Some of the kids are still walking around in shorts, or a light shirt without jacket, and flip flops. If that´s what they have to wear, I can´t imagine they have much in the way of blankets in their homes. The dogs are a trembling, wet mess. It´s all just kind of depressing around here.

Be careful that you don't get sick. Damp and cold is a bad combination.
It's hot as hell here (NYC).

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Wow - stay as warm as you can Opt. An odd statement considering it's been in the 90's or above 100 for last month, it feels like. Going to continue at least another week. I think it's safe to say that we're BOTH ready for autumn!

Yeah, just as it was weird for me coming down here in the awful summer heat and hearing about everybody´s snow back home. This has been such an extreme year for weather.

I just wish the rain would go away and the cool weather would stay. :cloak: --this is Optimistica Abrigada (bundled up)

Up until about 2 weeks ago, San Diego was having a colder than normal summer. We actually set new record low temps in early July.

That does sound like rough weather, Opti.

We've been in hot, oven-like conditions here. I've been taking a clean white towel to my boys' baseball games. I can then pour ice water on it and wear it around my neck and mop off my sweating face. I sit in my chair in the shade and try to move.
