Brazil opens bidding for high speed rail line
Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Brazil opened the bidding process Tuesday for a 329-mile high speed rail line connecting Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and costing an estimated $19 billion. Nov. 29 as the deadline for bids, and he winner will be announced Dec. 16.

Contenders for the design-build-operate contract include Alstom of France, Siemens of Germany, and Mitsui & Co. of Japan.

The state development bank BNDES will fund up to 60% of the total cost. Brazil's government will create a company known as ETAV to manage the project and will retain a majority share in the project.

The estimated travel time between Brazil’s two largest cities on the new trains will be just over 1.5 hours, compared to one hour by air and six hours by bus.

One of the closest calls I ever had when flying (at least that I'm aware of) was on a Lockheed Electra taking off from Saõ Paulo on a flight to Rio.

Sweet.

I lived in Sao Paulo when the had the fire that shut down the commuter airport (Congonhas) in Sao Paulo, for several months you had to go all the way out to Guarulhos to catch the shuttle to Rio. That made it more like a 4+ hour trip from downtown to downtown.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Call me a cynic if you will, but the terms 'South America' and 'High Speed Rail Network' just don't seem to go together somehow.

Brazil's more high tech than you think. They're the third largest airline manufacturer, have a thriving alternative energy industry and have managed deepwater drilling projects without creating environmental disasters unlike the British.

I'm almost certain you've flown on Brazilian aircraft.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Sure, you probably fly them on American to Dallas.

Now they've branching out of the regional jet market into larger aircraft. The Delta Shuttle even flies them now.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

What a bloody cheek. In a recent survey, Britons were asked which railways they like to travel on for speed and efficiency, they answered:

1. None - 75%
2. British Rail - 15%
3. Spoiled ballots - 10% (possibly due to lack of serviceable public lavatories at many railway stations)

In other words, we're second to none when it comes to fast, efficient rail travel!
