Tomorrow morning, Puffin and I leave for our 10 day stint at Apple Hill Chamber Music Camp. I was so worried a month ago that I wouldn't be up for it after my surprise hospitalization and recup, but I think I will be fine.

What makes this especially exciting is that she's coming with me. Keeping her playing the violin over the past few years has been a challenge, to put it mildly, so this is nothing short of a coup. She's been practicing like mad for the past two months since the music assignments came out, and for the last month taking two violin lessons per month. She had NOOOOO idea how much work it was going to be. I was actually somewhat surprised at the difficulty of the pieces she was assigned: A Bach concerto for 3 violins and a Schubert Quartet. She blames me for submitting an audition tape of her playing the Bach concerto for 2 violins which she points out took A WHOLE YEAR to learn, and now she was assigned pieces that are JUST AS HARD.

The really funny thing is how she came to agree to this. She's been a reluctant violin player for the past few years, but I've insisted on her continuing. Unfortunately, her school doesn't have an orchestra, so I've also insisted that she try out for and play at the statewide district music festival. Last fall she was adamant that she didn't want to do it, but it was not negotiable. She begged and cajoled and told me she'd do anything to get out of it. So, I (thinking she'd never agree) told her she could do Apple Hill instead. Without hesitation, she said, okay, and the whole time, I'm hiding my excitement barely able to contain myself.

A few weeks ago, it finally occurred to her how much easier it would have been to do the district festival. The sad part of it is, the reason she was so dreading the district festival was because she didn't want to be seen at school carrying a violin case. The great part is, she's coming with me to this wonderful camp that has totally captivated me for the past couple of years and nearly everyone else who has set foot there.

Oh well. If nothing else, she has improved immensely in the past two months preparing for this. I'm so hoping, though, that it will be a positive experience for her and help her cross that bridge of learning to love classical music. She's got the ear, she's got the rhythm, she's got the smarts - all she needs is the spirit. Here's hoping . . .

I can believe this. I remember reaching an age where is was terribly uncool to carry my saxophone case.
