I have a Western Digital USB drive (with NTFS format at present). My daughter plugs it into her Mac and it recognises it, but she can't drag files or folders onto it. The only thing it will let her do is backup the entire laptop drive onto the USB drive. Is this normal? Is there anyway to get the Mac to allow drag and drop onto the drive? |

1hp: I use MacFuse to be able to drag/drop between my NTFS Windows 7 partition and OSX via the Finder. Here's a write up on installing, and configuring MacFUSE to accomplish this (I'm assuming this would work for a USB drive as well, but I'm not positive). |

If I recall correctly, you can't write to NTSF drives with a Mac. You can read, but not write. I think by "backup," you mean reformat the drive as HTFS, and then copy the laptop to it. |

George: See above post. You can indeed write to NTFS with NTFS-3g and MacFUSE. I routinely download items which I simply drag over to my windows partition and write to the NTFS portion of the disk. |

We cross posted.... I've never used (or had need to) use MacFUSE. |

Is there another format besides NTFS that will work better with the Mac? If so, how do I format it using the Mac? Thanks for the help - I just don't know my way around a Mac! |

To reformat the drive, plug it in, and open "Disk Utility" (it's in the "utilities" folder in the "applications" folder at the root of the hard drive. A list of attached devices will appear in the left hand side of the software. ![]() Select the drive that you want (the USB external) and select "erase". |

If you want to maintain compatibility with Windows (so the reformatted drive can be read/written by Mac and Windows), choose the FAT format. If you want only the Mac to use the drive, choose "Mac OS Extended (journaled)." Journaling makes it more robust against "improper shutdown/disconnect." |
