Luke swam the final leg of the four man relay tonight. Our team actually had three teams compete because of the age group. One team that was the best four swimmers in the age group, one team that was filled with the kids that needed a coach to get them across the pool, and Luke's group which was Luke, 2 other kids that could swim across the pool, and one little boy that couldn't make it without a coach's assistance. As a result, they could never officially compete, only participate. Today, Luke's friend Alex was back after being out 2 weeks from being sick. Alex can swim across the pool, so they put him on Luke's team, and put the other biy back on Team C. Luke's team was ecstatic, as this time they would really compete for place ribbons. There was a total of six teams competing, and by the time it finally got to Luke's leg, the first two teams had already finished (our "A" group winning easily, and the other teams top team in second). When Luke dove into the water, they were in fifth place. A good 5 meters behind fourth place and about 8 meters behing 3rd. I was working as a timer, and missed the first part of his lap as I was turning in the time for the winning lane, when I heard some of his teamates start chanting "Lu-cas, Lu-cas, Lu-cas". I look over to see him just chugging along, passing 4th, and closing on 3rd. The problem was that he was running out of space, and the 3rd place started to speed it up knowing that somebody was catching up. But Lukejust kept chugging. Each stroke gaining ground. Now alot of the parents were chanting, too. Closer, closer, when they hit the wall it was simultaneous. The other boy's body was a little ahead, but Luke stretched further. There are three timers in each lane. One in the other lane had Luke's time ahead, another had them identical, the third had the other boy beating him out at a slightly larger margin than the other judge had Luke. In the end the other team got 3rd, but wow! There was no question, one more meter, and it would have been indisputable. Some of the other parents were remarking that they had never seen as much excitement over who would take third place in that age group. I didn't really care, as I was proud as hell of how he just kept chugging. |

She's breaking records everytime she swims in Kansas. i love swim meets. I'm glad to know he is competing. |

Cool, LD. I can't wait until my kids are playing sports. Is Luke 8 years old?

LD - cool! I think I actually found video of your boy in the future. The final lap starts around the 3:00 mark...one of all-time favorite sports moments. Such an incredible come back on the last lap (smashing the 100-meter split record in the process) |
