Das Boot - for MacHeads

Das Boot is a utility that will allow you to format a flash drive for the Mac OS, install an operating system on it, and put on whatever utilities (like Disk Warrrior, etc) for troubleshooting. Previous versions didn't support Leopard, or Snow Leopard. The new version supports both. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks interesting.

And it's free...

Nice ... and in other news, Apple, Inc. incorporated a newer OpenSSL implementation, which changed the "openssl" command line syntax a bit.

You know ... with Das Boot, you can probably put your own Mac environment on a flash drive and carry it around with you for use with just about any OS X flash-boot-capable Mac with a USB flash drive reader out there. Just a thought. :)

Exactly. I just tried it out, and though the install went fine, I used the Disc Warrior CD as the OS source. It's OS X 10.4.9, and it won't boot my 2009 iMac. I don't have a flash drive big enough to install Snow Leopard on (yet), but that's my next project.

Of to Amazon for a 16 gig drive...

Knoppix works wonderfully, and it'll fit on a single CD (or use about half of a 1GB thumb drive).

I've used Knoppix to boot PC's but never my Mac. The nice thing about Das Boot is that you can install and run Mac utilities from it.

George: Yeah, I really like that idea. I didn't mean that Knoppix was comparable to Das Boot - I just meant that it's a great, and free bootable OS and works great for carrying around a linux distro with you.

Ubuntu has a handful of such utilities. All pretty slick if you ask me.

Speakin' o' which, one of my roommates cracked his phone last night and put an open source linux OS on his phone. He used a freaking terminal opened up on his phone to reset our modem, while he was 30 miles away at work.

Ridiculous.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I'm dual booting Android 2.1 on my WinMo HTC Touch Pro and love it.
Terminal + Mobile = Hawesome

Ridiculous.
There is a terminal app for iPhone OS, and it does SSH too. No "cracking" needed at all. I'm just too cheap to pay the $0.99 for one. :P

The more interesting thing is VNC (or VNC-like) client on smart phones. Ones that can work over dynamic address assignment and get over NAT would cost a premium (e.g., LogMeIn's client app costs $30). Again, I am too cheap to pay for one at the moment. :P

Well, you should see my roommate's phone. It's over 2 years old and an iPhone it most certainly ain't.

Also proves extremely useful when Windows crashes and is not repairable. In this case Knoppix is the only method of recovering files from the hard drive before formatting and reinstalling Windows. (Though to be fair to Microsoft, the cause of this in my case was the disk drive crashing, which killed Windows and prevented me from reinstalling it - booting with Knoppix allowed me to recover most of the files on the disk. These days I won't run without dual RAID drives).

Now this is of interest. I have a Diamond Touch - wonder if I could run Android on it? How easy was it to set up with the dual boot?

1hp - aside from the keyboard our phones are the same.
PPCGeeks has plenty of posts on dual booting - but the method I most prefer is using a utility which allows you to boot into Android without rebooting the phone. Then, to get back to WinMo you simply soft-reset.
Here's a thread which shows the most current version for the Raphael (HTC Diamond and Touch Pro), what's working, what isn't, installation instructions - etc.
Best of luck!

Isn't it possible to boot a PC from an external drive is case something like this happens? I always have a (small) drive with the OS on it that I can select on startup by holding down the alt option key. THen, it's just a matter of file recovery.

Frankly, Knoppix boots so fast that I'm not sure that I would want to try booting into Windows from an external drive. I've tried Knoppix on several computers and it seems to boot clean without the need for any "extra" drivers, and all hardware is functional. Only thing it doesn't let you do is write to a Windows hard drive (though that might have changed now ??) as it claims that 100% compatibility is not guaranteed.

Thanks for the info on the phone.

Jon: Linux names are always great - that's half of your development time in Mac/Linux/Unix world - thinking up clever names.
