Interesting analysis

Quote:

"During the period 1951-63, when marginal rates were at their peak - 91 percent or 92 percent - the American economy boomed, growing at an average annual rate of 3.71 percent," he wrote in February. "The fact that the marginal rates were what would today be viewed as essentially confiscatory did not cause economic cataclysm - just the opposite. And during the past seven years, during which we reduced the top marginal rate to 35 percent, average growth was a more meager 1.71 percent."

Months later, with USA Today reporting that tax rates are at a 60-year nadir, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a Brookings Institution audience that "the rich are not paying their fair share in any nation that is facing (major) employment issues ... whether it is individual, corporate, whatever the taxation forms are."

The economic boom mentioned was because we were coming out of a major world war and not because we were taxing so much. Also, growth rates were much higher the past seven years up to the point where the housing bubble burst. This "analysis" amounts to comparing apples with oranges and bracketing selection.

Rather than looking at tax rates, perhaps a more logical thing to look at would be tax revenues.

Heck, no. It was because we were taxing the bejesus out of everyone that we had brisk economic growth.

Thank you George for pointing out the obvious flaw.
There are so many factors that play into "economic boom" or "economic bust." It isn't as simple (ever) as isolating one number that rises or falls and naming it the cause of either a boom or a bust.

Of course, the chart shown by Klaus raises a very important question: Is the rise in the number of pirates a cause of global warming or is it an effect of global warming?

Or should that be anthropiramorphic climate change?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Actually, the graph shows a correspondence of increasing global temperature with decreasing numbers of pirates so, to address your cause and effect question, I suppose it could be said they don't like warm weather or warm weather does not like them.

You reasoning is fallacious, sirrah. There is no credible evidence of cold climate pirates. Ergo, pirates do, in fact, prefer warm weather.

Then, clearly, warm weather does not like them.

That is soooo flawed. There were definitely more than 17 pirates in 2000. :bluecool:
