LsD- you have to disable their brain entirely - an ice pick into the skull may or may not achieve that.
The pruning shears are a better bet - but you're subscribing to the "OMG Zombies are so fun to kill kthnx" mentality. This is going to be serious business, with no room for error. I'll take a broadsword at 4 feet away over pruning sheers at -1 foot any day when facing a horde of brain-hungry zombies.

Ok, seriously? Let me introduce you to the kilij. This was the dominant sword used throughout the Ottoman Empire, and Turkey. It also was a favorite for the troops of Vlad the Impaler. Nasty piece of work.

Warning, slightly gory.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

OK - I'm sold on the Kilij.

The Katana is lighter and faster. Plus, when in the hands of an expert it can actually cut through multiple enemies in one strike. Unfortunately, it requires much training to be proficient. That's why the Katana was the weapon for the more elite warriors with sufficient training.

The Kilij, while heavier and slower, is much more devestating in the hands of a novice. The attacks don't need to be anywhere near as precise, and the heft of it can also be useful in knocking a zombie back a few feet buying you space and time.

A claymore is even more effective yet, but is just too large and cumbersome when dealing with a horde.

Those trench knives were designed to penetrate the heavy coats worn by troops of that time. Do zombies wear those on their heads?

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

JBryan - to be fair, we have no idea what zombies will be wearing when they come (and they WILL come).

I suppose we should be prepared for anything.

Slight difference. These are trench spikes, designed to penetrate a helmet and the skull underneath. Trench knives were similar, but did have a little more of a serrated edge on the three edges.

My apologies, the upper one, does appear to be a Mark 1 trench knife designed for the purpose you mentioned. Here's a closer view of it's predecessor:

Three edged knives have been illegal since then because they produce wounds that are nearly impossible to heal. However, in the present context we can forego such considerations.
