Toyota to Recall 11,500 Lexus Vehicles
Recall due to electrical problems that cause the steering system to malfunction for a few seconds.

Wednesday, May 19, 2010
By Peter Alpern

Toyota said on May 19 it would recall 11,500 Lexus vehicles worldwide because of a steering system defect, in the latest blow to the auto giant's reputation.

Toyota said it had received 12 reports of electrical problems causing the steering system to malfunction for a few seconds in four models -- the LS460 and LS460L, and the LS600h and LS600hL hybrids.

"We are planning to recall a total of about 11,500 Lexus models worldwide," Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Paul Nolasco said.

The Japanese government said the recall would include around 4,500 Lexus cars domestically.

Mamoru Kato, auto analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities, said the latest development showed Toyota was working to speed up its recall and quality control process after facing earlier criticism for being too slow. "After Toyota was criticized for its delays in announcing recalls, it has changed its procedure so that it can act more swiftly in dealing with customer complaints," he said.

Toyota has pulled around 10 million vehicles worldwide since late last year for safety issues and has paid a record $16.4 million fine to settle claims it hid gas pedal defects blamed for more than 50 US deaths.

The beleaguered auto giant also faces a host of lawsuits over "unintended acceleration" issues that prompted the majority of the recalls. It still faces looming litigation that could potentially involve massive fines, while US regulators are questioning why a Japanese recall of Hilux trucks in 2004 was not extended to the United States until a year later.

Despite the massive recall crisis, the company recently reported a return to profit in the previous fiscal year and forecast it to rise in the current term.

Ratings agency Moody's in April downgraded the carmaker, saying uncertainty over product quality following the mass recalls raised questions over its profitability.

A few seconds with the steering malfunctioning must feel like an eternity.

You kidding me? When I shop for my next car a couple decades from now I'm going to look at 2010 Toyotas very first. The media backlash from all this stuff has been awesome for the company's safety standards. I'll bet some of the Corollas made this year will even outlast me.

Not only would I trust a new Toyota to be a really safe bet, I think this whole mess will inspire competitors to up their game, safety wise. I imagine they're all working overtime to prevent being the next news story.

Toyota's problems are indicative of a large culture shift within the company, and getting the company back to where it was, quality wise, will take a very long time. Just look at what happened to the US auto manufacturers in the 70's, and how long it has taken them to get back to where some of them are today. Toyota lost it's way a while back, and it's only just been noticed.

You can buy all the Pintos you want - they'll be cheap, but the problem remains.

POP! Goes the balloon.

Has anybody ventured to a Toyata lot? Are there serious discounts going on?

I'd buy a Toyota if I was in the new car shopping mode and they truly were slashing prices.

HOLY CARP!!!
There were some really good deals and financing terms about six months ago. Don't know what things are like now.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Toyota safety in spotlight after fatal Utah crash

..........Paul Vanalfen's 2008 Camry slammed into a rock wall in Wendover on Nov. 5, killing him and passenger Charlene Lloyd. Police said the 66-year-old man from Washington Terrace died at the scene, and the 38-year-old Lloyd died the following day.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nathan Croft told The Salt Lake Tribune that the Camry was subject to at least three recalls. The recall and repair for a sticking accelerator, had been completed, he said.

......................Tire skid marks at the crash site showed Vanalfen tried to stop the Camry as it exited Interstate 80, Croft said. The car went through a stop sign at the bottom of the ramp and through an intersection before hitting the wall, according to the police report.

The Camry's brakes appeared to be in working order, Croft said.
