Gustavo Dudamel is the new music director of the LA Philharmonic. The 29 year old Venezuelan is a dynamo of musical energy. Venezuela has an innovative music program for young people called El Sistema. Dudamel is a product of El Sistema, and has started a US version of the program in several cities. He is just an amazing guy, with endless love of music and its potential to change young people's live. Gustavo -- think of him as the Jamie Oliver of music! |

Dang, I'll appreciate this so much more if I had only known who Jamie Oliver is. But good to learn that a new star is in the making anyway.

I guess you missed this thread, Ax: http://s10.zetaboards.com/The_New_Coffee_Room/topic/7243779/1/ Jamie Oliver is a Brit who is passionate about getting kids to eat real food, not the processed stuff. He started a program of healthy school lunches in the UK, and he was featured in a TV show called Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution a month or so ago. He went to Huntington West Virginia (which had been named the unhealthiest city in the US) to teach people about a real food diet. I think MS' post in the thread has a link to ABC, where you can watch the episodes online. |

My daughter's piano teacher's husband is a violinist from Venezuela. I wonder if he went through that program when he was a kid. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |
