Scouts did an overnight camping trip. M&M's decided to bring an air mattress. Rather than bring a couple of the smaller ones:

Which is just big enough to take up most of the tent, and not quite big enough for three people in sleeping bags. If everybody lays perfectly still, it's fine once you find your position. Whenever one person moves however... I've got pulled muscles this morning from trying desperately not to roll out of the bed whensomeone moved, and straining to keep my place.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I used to just through a couple thick-ish blankets on the floor of the tent, and deal with the aches in the morning. At least then you can usually find a comfy-enough spot to sleep through the night.

Where'd you guys go for the campout?

I use the self inflating camp mats - 2 or 3 on the tent floor take the hardness off the ground, plus provide an insulating layer for warmth. Also roll pretty tight and don't take up much room in the car.

That's what I want to pick up.

We just went to a local campground/park/fishing hole called Lake Fairfax.

That's what we have now, and they are good. But I spent most of my camping life using cheap foam that you just roll up.

Part of camping is toughing it out and having less than stellar sleeps, I always thought. :hat:

that's so funny.

we happen to have a 12 person tent. my cousin gave it to us.. just left it on our porch. we didn't find out till later where it came from. the scouts use it all the time.

what they need is a blow up tent with a built in mattress.

Feeling halfway back to human now. Sue, my experience is normally opposite yours. When I'm camping, I normally find it easy to fall asleep, and normally it's my most restful sleep. I might only get 5-6 hours, but when I get up, I'm awake, rested, and ready to go. I might have a few creaks and aches if I slept on the ground, but those usually work themselves out within a few minutes.

Oh well, the best part of the trip was the homemade fishing rods the scouts made. Nobody caught anything, and I didn't really expect them to as the lake is overfished, and fifteen screaming young boys descending on the lake in full excited whooping mode is not very conducive to catching fish, but Luke did get some really good hits in the spot I led him to, and very nearly hooked one.

Yeah that's what I use while camping, too. Sorry to hear of the back problems LD!

It wasn't the back so much as the legs.

Me also. Nothing like listening to huge numbers of coyotes howling in the distance out in the desert.
