HOLY CARP!!!

Have you ever gotten a sore throat from not eating enough, or am I insane? I've cut down my calorie intake, since I'm 40 pounds overweight, and I think it is giving me a sore throat. Here's why. All my life I have noticed that if I don't eat dinner the next morning when I do eat my throat is very sore. A few hours later I'm fine. The last 10 days I have cut my calorie intake way down. A sore throat started about 6 days ago and won't go away. My doc prescribed a 5-day course of the antibiotic Azithromycin 250 mg based on a phone consultation, no exam. I'm on day 4 and feel no relief. It only feels better when I'm actually eating, unless I try to eat something with acid like pineapple or citrus, which stings. Even when not eating or drinking it is very painful to swallow. It is worse when I lay down to sleep. Last night I could not sleep through the night because of the pain. I do not have a cold or flu or a temp. The lymph node on the right side of my neck is tender and slightly swollen. Have any of you ever had a sore throat related to not eating enough, or heard of this relationship? |

Are you drinking enough? Dieting can lead you to not getting enough water. I would imagine dehydration could lead to sore throats etc. (Disclaimer: I'm pulling this out of my you-know-what, but it makes sense) |

Hmm, good point John, I'll drink more water. Do antibiotics take longer to work? |

I'm not familiar with Azithromycin as I'm allergic to that class, but maybe you should be checked to make sure you have a bacterial infection if the antibiotic hasn't helped. The only time I've run into an antibiotic that didn't work well enough was Amoxicillin. PS, if it's worse when you lay down, I would wonder about GERD. If it were me, I'd see a doc at this point, 6 days sore throat with no improvement. |

Do you get allergies? Mine have been unusually bad this year, although I guess you're on completely the other side of the country, so it being common might be a bit unlikely. |

Yep, allergies still give me some sore throats . . . at least the tonsils came out a couple of years ago, tonsillitis sucked. |

It's possible you've developed some. Does happen. I too, get sore throats from some allergic reactions (cottonwood comes to mind). I really can't see any connection with eating less, but then I'm no doctor. do you have any OC allergy meds in the house? might be worth trying one, and see if that makes a difference. might at least give you something to rule out, anyways. maybe it's that 1.99 wine.

I know you don't think you have a cold...,but my thoughts are with cutting back on eatting, you may have been weak and picked up a virus. Don't skip dinner. Consider having chicken broth for dinner. Just a thought. |

It is not indigestion. It is not burping up pain. It localized in my throat when I swallow or while I'm actually eating citrus, not after I swallow it. Yes I do have SA. |

I would call the doctor back. Drink tea also -- maybe camomile -- not too hot. |

I do not have a cold sore but have got them in the past. Do you think it may be a cold sore in the back of my throat? I'll try to check with a flash light and a mirror. |

Yes I do. Its a very good possibility that you have some sort of canker sore back there. It fits with the swollen glands as well. I live with near chronic canker sores and when I have them I always have painful swelling of the lymph glands. No cure. Came up quickly - sounds viral as canker sores are. The non response to antibiotics would indicate it. I've had them in the back of my throat and also often on the sides of my tongue. Makes life hell. |

I just reread your first post. Wow! Really sounds like a canker sore because the pain is so acute, and that certain foods sting. I can't wait for your visit to the doctor. Let us know how it comes out! |

Azithromycin permanently messed up my hearing. That is an extremely powerful drug that people prescribe and pop like candy. Be careful of THAT. I'd go with the water thing. It could also be carb withdrawal or something. I'd be very wary however of taking meds to mask the superficial symptoms. I found that my allergies are worse not smoking than they ever were smoking. My body is adjusting as I'm sure yours is too. Go with it. |
