What kind of furniture do you have?

We have a mixture of what would fit in this little house to what is affordable. Recently, we have been looking at casual dining tables to replace our oak table, and it seems oak is no longer popular. We have also noticed that getting furniture in the USA is extremely expensive now.

And speaking of oak – some furniture stores don’t even sell much wood. Scandinavian Designs has a lot of glass furniture, including glass counter stools.

We have a mixture of French, oriental and a few nondescript contemporary/transitionl (whatever that means) pieces.

The best shape for a dining table is always round. I personally like really old round oak pedestal tables that have leaves if you need them. How much space do you have and what style furniture?

Always? I'm not a fan of round dining tables. ^_^
Unless the room dimensions require round.

I have a 300+ lb extension dining table from Pottery Barn. If it ever starts raining meteors, I'm going under that table.

A total hodge podge.
Each item was added for its intrinsic value.
No consideration whatsoever was given to what would "go" with what.

I love it.

ZOOOOOM!
A thoughtless accumulation of family hand-me-downs, as-is Ikea specials and pieces from my grandmother's house after she left it.

The upside is, any of that stuff ever catches on fire or if I need to flee the state in a hurry, it'll be a pretty painless transition.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Mikhailoh,
We have a galley kitchen which includes the dining area. Currently, we have a 48 inch round oak with the animal pedestal feet. I'm kind of tired of the table. It came with a large leaf. When the leaf is put in, then the table is right up near the piano located in the livingroom. One can barely move around the 48 in round table in our dining area.

We are again looking for a round table. We have a small china hutch in oak. It was not bought at the same time, so the stain is different.

Also, lots of furniture these days is huge, and would not fit in this house.

With limited space look for a 42" round glass top pedestal table, maybe even with a rattan base. There's room to seat 4 and it takes up less room than the 48". The clear glass makes the room look bigger too. You can also use a big oriental vase as the base, which is a real nice look in the right place. They're a little expensive, but can look really good.

How often do you need a bigger table? A glass top can be put up on its side and the base put in teh basement or somewhere, and you could have a nice long plastic foldup table from Costco or somewhere that you put up with a tablecloth when needed.

You could also think of refinishing or of painting your existing table. Is it old?

The table is 26 years old. Made in USA. It is our only table - used for all meals. We don't have a separate table for in the kitchen and one in a diningroom.

Does anyone want to post pictures of their tables? I still haven't studied how to post pictures on this forum, but would love to see other folks tables.

Formal dining table is rectangle with two leaves to seat up to 10. It's red-stained oak, "mission" style. The every day table is a small rectangle located in the "nook" area off the kitchen. Round wouldn't work so well in that space as we had five of us. Someday, when there is just the two of us, we may get a small round table so that we can be a bit more cozy.

I agree with Mik's idea on the glass - if the area is small is should help lighten the feel.

All of our house furniture is intended to give a comfortable 1940's feel.

Oh lord.. I wouldn't put that monstrosity in my house for love or money. I was always amazed Jane let him buy it. :lol2:

Here's my dining room. Janet had this furniture when we met. The wall units don't exactly match, two different manufacturers, but very close. Both oriental in style.

Mik, you'd love my dining table. It's an antique, solid oak, round extension table. It has the massive claw feet with a round turned leg the sits inside the main base. When it's extended, that extra leg supports the middle of the table. We have ten leaves, each ten inches wide, and the table is 66 inches across. For big family gatherings, we can seat 24 at that table.

I have a bizarre mix of IKEA, hand me downs, el cheapo pieces purchased at the grocery store (President's Choice FTW!), and beautiful antiques that were given to my mother and I out of my grandparent's shop years ago. Liam's bedroom set is actually a decent one, purchased second hand. The chair in my living room is a recent hand me down from my aunt - and she bought it at a second hand shop, but I like the style. My couch is a decent piece that I actually bought new. My dresser is a rare wood, built in the mid 1800s. Whatever works.
