I find this report of actions by concert goers infuriating. She got more than a raw deal when the surgery went poorly. Julie Andrews is the epitome of grace and dignity regardless of her voice. She has earned respect. The article with imbedded video: http://www.popeater.com/2010/05/10/julie-andrews-bad-reviews/?icid=main|main|dl2|link6|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.popeater.com%2F2010%2F05%2F10%2Fjulie-andrews-bad-reviews%2F Julie Andrews never intended to sing much at her 'Gift of Music' concert at London's O2 Arena on Saturday -- promoters and the star made that clear beforehand -- but that didn't stop fans from getting their knickers in a twist and it certainly couldn't stem the tide of nasty reviews from the anything-but-polite British tabloids. The 'Sound of Music' icon hasn't sung much since surgeons botched an operation on her vocal chords in 1997, and the evening was touted as a "live review" with stories and sing-alongs. But she only crooned two songs, and fans paying upwards of $150 felt "bemused," as one walk-out told the AFP. The Daily Mail said, "It is horrifyingly obvious that, despite knowing the notes to sing, Andrews most resolutely cannot sing almost anything." Andrews' backup singers handled the vocals on most of the songs while she chimed in on occasion. She also told stories, and there was a musical staging of a children's story that she wrote with her daughter. "It should have been called, 'An evening with 5 unknown singers,'" zinged one concertgoer on The Sun's Web site. When she did sing on her own -- which she did on 'My Funny Valentine' -- Andrews' once-dazzling instrument was indeed low and forced, but still impressive considering her vocal chords have been ruined. Because of the surgery, she can only use the lower register of her voice. The Stage newspaper's critic wrote: "I've seldom seen so many walkouts. She sang precisely two songs in their entirety in the whole evening." According to some accounts, at least a quarter of the audience left halfway through the show. "I feel totally robbed," one fan told the Daily Mirror. "I saw at least 2,000 people walking out. It became like a second-rate pantomime." The Daily Telegraph sniped: "Now the tills are alive with the sound of refunds." |

I like one of the commenters who said of these 'walkouts' and 'critics,' "They have no souls." Many an old musician is accorded great respect even as their instrument fades. They bring other qualities to their performance. And in this case, anyone who is unaware of Andrews' situation, and who feels cheated as a result, has earned some scorn for their multiple levels of ignorance. |

It's a bloody shame that muslim extremists focus so much on blowing up Danish cartoonists and seemingly leave the British Press alone. I guess there are some things even rats won't touch. |

HOLY CARP!!!

What I don't get is why someone who can't sing anymore would agree to do a concert. I've always admired her voice, feel badly about the botched operation etc., but have to wonder why she would do this. |

Because she has always had a lot more to offer besides her singing. What ignorant boors. |

It was well publicized that she would not be singing much. Caveat emptor. |

It was not publicized that whatever little singing that she would do would suck, either. |

BTW, I like Julie Andrews. I think she is very graceful, and she ages very gracefully. I think she should sing if that what she likes to do. I just don't agree with raking people who walks out on her singing over the coal. |

These people would probably have been happier if she'd mimed. Let's face it, nobody walks out on Britney Spears and she can't sing worth a dam either. |

Nonsense. If you are of a disposition to buy a ticket to see Julie Andrews at what they cost, you're gong to be well aware of the situation. |

ZOOOOOM!

+1. Besides, there are a couple of reasons why you might walk out of a show. If the performer is legitimately talentless, okay, that might be a legit reason. But when you're seeing Julie Andrews, who's obviously very talented, and you walk out because you don't like the sound of her voice that's been altered by a botched surgery, you're an ignorant asshat. |

Nonsense. Their is little to no correlation with ticket price and quality of singing. (D'oh made that point too.) |

I think there's a direct correlation between people who walk out of a show such as this and whether they are asshats. With a Britney Spears concert it might be an inverse correlation, but it's still there. |

Did she have a botched breast and face operation, or are her true talents intact? I mean it's not as if she was a singer or something. |

You can feel that way if you wish. Had I been at the concert and watched lots of (ignorant, boorish, rude, vulgar) people walk out, I think I would have had a difficult time restraining myself from giving the nearest a piece of my mind. You're entitled to think that these are good upstanding people who feel like they were taken to the cleaners, and I'm entitled to agree with Aqua that they are asshats. |

No, I don't think that the concept of "being taken to the cleaners" applies here at all. But I can understand not wanting to suffer the heartache (or just not wanting to waste time) watching your idol crash and burn in a public performance. People walking out on poor performance also has the broader effect of discouraging performers who cannot deliver from trying to perform (and/or discouraging promoters trying to trout out performers who cannot deliver). |
