Scary pics. Saudi Arabia is after the collapse of the Taliban state probably the state with the most radical oppression of women.

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Faceless brides feel like a figment of Margaret Atwood's literary mind. Profoundly disturbing. |

Veils for brides used to be common here in the USA. They were normally drawn back at the beginning of the ceremony, though. Big Al |

"Any man who would make an X rated movie should be forced to take his daughter to see it". - John Wayne There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it". Henry II: I marvel at you after all these years. Still like a democratic drawbridge: going down for everybody. Eleanor: At my age there's not much traffic anymore. From The Lion in Winter.

It's kind of like - and I have noticed this in other situations - try to act big and bad, but they know it's a sham. Almost an inferiority complex. |

John, I can imagine you at many a stuffy Victorian dinner party. You know, the kind at which a dozen overdressed people sit down to incinerated pork and mushy vegetables, and in the middle of this feast some ruddy young aristocrat who thinks too much of himself goes on and on, ending with 'don't you agree?' You would be a real scream in that situation. Had much practice dueling? |

Yes. I try to imagine what it must feel like, swathed from head to toe in metres of fabric, parked like so much cattle with hundreds of other faceless beings, just waiting for something to be done to me. Disturbing is the right word. |

Y'all are seeing it through your eyes. They have different eyes. Respect diversity. Sure, flying commercial jets into buildings is bad. These women are not doing that but we lump them into the same group. ![]() I've heard interviews of muslim women who like the veil. Perhaps they were not lying. Some nudist find wearing any clothes to be oppressive too and resent society forcing them to. Everything is relative to what you are used to. |

You seem to miss the fact that people can indeed be interested in things in a "National Geographic" sense while at the same time reserving the right to think critically about different social and political systems. Fascination and interest, does not preclude judgment. Diversity is not preeminent virtue. |
