Not sure if Apple has invented the iSlam yet, but when they do, I bet there will be an American Crusade against it!

Very timely. There already has been an iSlam, from the Blackberry-in-Chief.

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/05/10/obama-warns-grads-twitter-ipad-peril/

I'm sure the pro-Apple forces are already forming a counter-attack.

All that link gave me was a logo saying 'Fox - fair and balanced' and then the words 'no content item selected'.

I guess even a stopped clock is right once a day.

From the article:

Quote:

BlackBerry-loving President Barack Obama declared war on technology, singling out Apple’s super-popular iPods and iPads for criticism at a commencement ceremony in Virginia, the New York Post reported Monday.

Obama -- whose election was credited in part to his skillful use of modern media, from smartphones to Twitter to Flickr -- on Sunday told college graduates that high-tech gizmos and apps were straining American democracy.

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said at Hampton University in southeastern Virginia.

Obama described the most popular offerings of companies like Apple, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo as distractions that are putting unnecessary pressure on the country.

Obama also lamented the spread of social media and blogs, through which "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction."

"All of this is not only putting new pressures on you," Obama said. "It is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."

"We can't stop these changes," he said, "but we can adapt to them. And education is what can allow us to do so. It can fortify you, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of your own time."

I'm sure that if they did release an iSlam, there'd be an immediate fatwa issued somewhere.
"By nature, i prefer brevity." - John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, p. 685.

"Never waste your time trying to explain yourself to people who are committed to misunderstanding you." - Anonymous

"Oh sure, every once in a while a turd floated by, but other than that it was just fine." - Joe A., 2011

I'll answer your other comments later, but my primary priority for the rest of the evening is to get drunk." - Klaus, 12/31/14

I love the fair, balanced language that Fox uses to report this story.

I agree it's not straight reportage, but what exactly isn't fair and balanced?

Declares war on technology?

I think what Fox is trying to do is imply that as a Blackberry user Obama is anti-Apple, since he 'singled them out' along with Sony and Microsoft. Does it count as being singled out if two other companies are also named?

It's just typical tabloid fair.

Is that how they spell "fare" in England?

Ah, you're right. I'm so blinded by partisanship jaded I zipped right past the "war" part. I think they were just going for irony - that Obama would diss iPod's, iPads, X-Boxes and Play Stations and make no mention of his beloved Blackberry.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
""With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work --"

Wasn't Obie the guy elected on the platform of being tech savvy, and the guy who maligned McCain about not being able to use a computer?

The dogma lives loudly within me.

I think what President Obama said has some truth to it. There is a tendency for people to hide behind technology. I am not super old, but grew and spent a lot of time in places without access to the latest technology and there is some positives to it.

I was speaking with a friend about texting, etc., and she felt more comfortable in many instances sending someone a text rather than speaking with them face on face. For example, why send 20 texts when you could do the same thing in a 15 second phone call.

While I am on a roll, the following was sent to me (I think it originally was on one of the news channels.

Quote:

It may sound ridiculous, but a few blogs today are considering this question:
Is it appropriate to send or receive text messages during sex?
The chatter is a spin-off from a 1,000-person survey, published in March, which found about one in 10 people younger than 25 say that they would not mind being "interrupted by an electronic message" during sex.
Among people older than 25, 6 percent said they would be fine with that inconvenience, according to the online survey by Retrevo, a website that reviews consumer electronics.
The survey reports a 4 percent error margin.
About a quarter of people in the under-25 group said they wouldn't mind getting a text message or e-mail while using the restroom (the chart actually says "on the John," but can we all agree to boycott that phrase?). And half of the younger people said they would be OK with a digital intrusion into a meal.
Older people were less fond of this all-the-time messaging. Sixty-two percent of people older than 25 said they don't like being interrupted by digital communications in general.
Maybe there's a serious conversation to be had somewhere in these salacious details.
Do you find electronic messages intruding in on your life?
Would you text during dinner with a friend? Are there any limits?
