How's that Vibe working out for you?

I'm probably two months away from getting a new car, and in the quizzes for what kind of car you should buy, the Pontiac Vibe keeps popping up as a good option for me. What's your take?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

HOLY CARP!!!
Sorry I missed this until now.

I love the car although it was my 3rd choice. My favorite things about the car - the manual transmission is the best I've ever had (and we have a 2001 Accord MT). The engine 2.4L seems to have a lot of torque and pulls very strong. The 320 watt stereo is great for factory - and I like that it has an aux jack so I can use my iPod. Of course I always loved the styling, alloy wheels and the added rear spoiler. Hauling stuff is great - all the seats fold flat. The hard surfaces of the trunk/rear seat backs did cause me to spring for the rubber mat in the back and the cargo net. The only downside is it only holds 49 cu. ft. of stuff w/the rear seats up and mpg has been a very middling 25 mpg in mixed driving. On one extended trip with a lot of hwy miles I got 30 mpg. I think it is combo of the MT, blunt and chunky styling and that strong engine. If I could have had a 1.8L optioned the way I wanted it would have been fine.

My top pick was the Mazda 5 stick shift mini-mini-van, though it only is available severely decontented. I can get a brand new one still for barely over 16k. It would seat six in a pinch (I'd LOVE that), has sliding rear doors, and of course hauls something like 72 cu. ft. with the seats all down.

Second choice was the Hyundai Elantra Touring (a standard wagon configuration). It can also be had for about $16k new and it's interior volume with the seats up or down beats the Vibe.

I went with the Vibe because I still liked it very much and I could use my GM Mastercard points to get $4300 off my best deal.

All that said, I right now am in the process of seeing if I can sell it. I hope to net between $5-6k in cash and then replace it with two vehicles - a late 90's Mazda Miata and a mid-90's small extended cab pick up. The two vehicles together would cover just about any transportation need (and desire).

So today I got my first response to my 4 sale ad on craigslist. Some guy named Mike, apparently using his wife's email, sent me a video - but I have to down load a tool bar first before I can watch it. :(blue:( It's a video of a vehicle that his cousin wants - so Mike (what a great guy to help out a cousin!) wants me to watch the video and see if the vehicle is the same. I tried to right click and copy the message so I could share it with everyone here, but the link won't let me. The good news is that the cousin is ready to pay EVEN MORE than my asking price! :thumb: Can't wait to get home and down load the tool bar and watch the video on my home computer!

Isn't that swell?

:rolleyes2:

I had an S10 extended cab. Kids in the back - heads hit the glass rear window. In a rear end collision it would be severe. That's why I sold it and bought a Chevy half ton extended cab.

Otherwise, you choice of 2 vehicles is good. I would like to buy a miata, though I like the hard top convertible version. Otherwise an old MG midget, or similar - something to tool around city streets in.

So Ian - have you not been able to swing the Solstice you wanted?

If my wife decides parking is much too dear to clog up with a third vehicle, I will almost certainly go for a 2005-09 Mustang. I'd love the convertible (even looks good with the top up) but need to find one that's less than $16k, has a manual transmission and preferably a two-tone interior. I could live w/the V6.

If I already had a motorcycle endorsement, another option (almost) would be a full-size pick up with a motorcycle for use on pleasant days in order to balance out the bad mpg of the truck. One cool thing about that would be that in the warmer months, when gas prices normally are spiking, I'd be riding the bike to work.

Hmmmm...something to think about.

No Solstice yet, largely because I haven't had a pay check for a while. Production is done with Pontiac's demise ( :veryangry: ), and I don't really want a used one. Pity, as I really was liking the coupe. :weeping:
