OK, number 2 is right out! Four seems fairly popular, if we can do something about the lettering. I think I might want the authors' names on a plain background, rather than in the image. Also, the image repeats, and we would want that changed. I have also sent the TNCR idea over to my coauthor, noting that we may have overly constrained the cover department by forcing that photo on them. Heck, we could use a picture of the Wren Building here at W&M in place of that picture. |

PD, remember that the "faith" of book is often decided by a split second glance at the cover. Some people will read a few lines on the back cover, IF they chose to pick the book from the shelf. And do not forget there is a struggling architect among us who will be extremly happy to earn a few bucks. |

I'm working on that one. Don't worry. I wouldn't want to use the building Radu found. We're getting a picture of the Wren Building here at W&M and then we'll suggest trying something along those lines as an option. But for me, at least so far, I'm inclined toward 4 (with changes), or something like 3 (perhaps redone like the two new submissions). |

Mind you, I'm not a professional graphic designer or anything, but I did run a couple of websites back in the 90's, so I tried out a couple of other concepts you might want to consider. This one in particular I think turned out well, and it even works with some of the images from your previous designs. Kind of a compromise between Radu's idea and the original covers you posted. Spoiler: click to toggle Keep in mind this is a rough sketch and not too polished but you get the idea, I think. |

P*D: This is OUP? It looks like a tech manual. Their graphic designer is stuck in a rut. S/he keeps trying to rework a fundamentally weak idea to make it stronger. Tell them they need to rethink the concept (there is no real concept to the cover design -- Varsity lettering is not strong enough to carry the message, a huge question mark or dollar sign is cliche). A book like this deserves better. |

One half of me likes the simple design. It gets across the message quickly for those browsing book covers in a library or store. The other half of me thinks a completely different design direction might work with a more elegant type treatment and graphic elements, but I'm not familiar with the target audience or similar books and what their covers look like. I like the photo, btw...but would be curious if there are other images you're looking at. I think the aerial shot is easily associated with a "college campus", and all of the various buildings, facilities, and other expenses that are involved, which seems to hit your target message right on. |
