I picked it up from the library this weekend, I'm about 200pp into it and find it gripping. And horrifying.

Has anyone here read it?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

no, I haven't read it jon, but thanks for the reminder. It's something I've meant to read. It's been recommended, and the tragedy is one that still haunts me. Guess because I'm reminded of it yearly, on my birthday.

Does the author dig up much more information than what we've already been shown?

I wouldn't say there's much in the way of explanations, unless one accepts "psycopaths like to hurt people" as an explanation. But it was a pretty compelling read, especially the bits about how psychopaths think.

In the this-is-why-I'm-going-to-hell category, one thing struck me as pretty funny. A kid who suffered brain damage in the attack (that's not the funny part) had been planning on becoming an architect. After the attack, he could no longer handle such a discipline intellectually and instead switched to... wait for it... business school. Graduated Cum Laude.

The biggest revelation for me in the book was the shameful police cover-up of how much they knew about one of the killers before the attack. A detective had drawn up a search warrant for Harris' home, which, for random reasons, was never brought before a judge, but was filed. It was proof that the police had evidence that Harris was a dangerous guy who was building bombs. He'd also been making public death threats against one of his classmates, and that classmate's parents had repeatedly called the cops about it.

After the attack, the cops had a secret meeting to discuss how they'd cover all that up. They're still lying about it to this day according to the book, getting caught every time, and then proceeding to lie some more.

Of course, nobody ever got into any trouble for that gross misconduct.

Yeah, I had the same reaction to that, Horace.

The cops even went as far as to defame the family that had previously turned Eric in. Someone should have done time for that.

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!
