Has anyone used Angie's List with any success?

I have about a bazillion projects that need doing before I put the house on the market next year and I am definitely not a DYIer. I'm going to call my realtor and have her come over and tell me what updates need to be done to sell quickly. I don't want to spend money unnecessarily so I was thinking a professional’s eye would help me. Many of the projects are cosmetic, but both the kitchen and bathroom need some serious updating.

I went on Angieslist.com last night and was quite miffed to discover that I have to subscribe to use the service. :veryangry: I think it was only $20 for a year but it still annoys me. I live in such a quiet rural town that I’d be really po’d if I paid the money and then found there is little or nothing listed for my area. Have you used Angie’s list before? Is it worth the $20 bucks?

The fee has always stopped me too - is there any money back guarantee? I'm always wary of internet recommendations as I fear the seller/contractor can post their own fake recommendations to make themselves look good. I'm not sure how angieslist works - if it facilitates fake recommendations or makes them less likely.

The membership rates on Angie's List are not the same for all. They are based on geography. The following figures were reported by Angie's List on December 4, 2009. In Charlottesville, VA, (22901) the annual membership rate is $10. In Stamford, CT, (06905) the rate is $32. In Beverly Hills, CA (90210) it's $36.25 a year, and in Pompano Beach, FL, (33062) the annual rate jumps to $47.

Kind of like whatever the traffic will bear. The subscription model limits the number of participants and, IMO, increases the possibility of abuse by contractors. Two free sources are Ripoff Report and Yahoo local. Neither is comprehensive, but worth a look.

I've used Angie's list. I figured the cost was worth if I used them just once. They do send a monthly subscription - and theoretically, provide some muscle if there's a problem with a vendor.
