A couple from our pre-natal class named their son London. I'm not a fan. |

fwiw, if Colin had been a girl we would have called her Sarah Catherine, Sarah Elisabeth being a close second choice. I still love the name Sarah; it's classic and beautiful without sounding sucky. I personally wouldn't name a girl after some current tv/movie/rock star, but that's just me. I wouldn't want to saddle her with that connection. Make sure the name can't be shortened to something really stupid (because that will happen). So, my top list Sarah Catherine Elisabeth Erin (I love that name, but a cousin had beat us to it, so we'd eliminated it early on) Margaret Oh, and like Aqua, I'd suggest no cutesy creative spelling. I met a kid called 'Leaf' the other day. His/her (wasn't sure) sibling was named Forest. Don't do that. |

I heard a story once about parents that were very focused on coming up with a name that could not be made fun of or rhymed with. They chose the name Amber. Brought little Amber home from the hospital and her older brother went up to the crib and said, "Hello Amburger!" |

Was that before or after the Seinfeld episode where George said he came up with the perfect girl's name (Seven) and the other couple stole it? |

Or you could do it the way Native Americans named their children. As soon as the child is born, walk outside (your teepee) and name the child after the first thing you see. Of course, I'm sure glad my old man didn't do that or you'd be referring to me as two dogs f#$king instead of Improv. |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences.

I like Abigail -- it means "the father's joy" -- and I can think of nothing which would give a man more joy than a daughter. It is also a noble name. Lilly and Elise are high on my list. Contra Mik, I like Eugenia. All very feminine names, but with strength. |

I think I posted a thread a while ago about an inner city black woman who got mad at her daughter's teacher for not pronouncing the name right. The daughter's name was "L-A" and it was supposed to be pronounced LaDasha. Srsly. La-Dash-A. ![]() Go with Katherine. |

Here's a cool site for baby names. It is from the government, Social Security Administration. You can query on baby names of a certain year back to 1880. http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ I was surprised these are 2008's most popular girl names: Emma Isabella Emily Madison Ava Olivia Sophia Abigail Elizabeth Chloe |

My, how the Susans have fallen from grace. No. 2 in 1959, now 712. Don't name your kid one of the top 2 names for that year. It sucks having the same name as so many of your peers. |

Yep, good for adulthood, that's what I meant. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis

Look at the most common names of the 1880s decade.![]() Look how many Marys there were. I was wondering how one name could pwn all others to THIS degree. I'll bet it must have been people naming there baby girls after the Virgin Mary. |

As much as I don't like the bizarre names and spelling, every once in a while I run across something special. We had a summer student last year who's name is Cimarron. She had long dark hair, slight colour in her skin, gorgeous. To me, her name really suited her. She had an exotic look to her, and the name fit. I asked her about it's origin, assuming it was something related to whatever side of the family she got the colour, but no. Her parents named her after a river in the states. |

Goes through Oklahoma, right? Reading a book right now that mentions it a couple of times. There's a Siobahn in our family and the name suits her pretty well but I don't think you have any chance of having that fly today. |

Wow, seriously? It's my great aunt's name and she's not ancient-old, but I don't really think anyone younger could pull off the name so easy around here. |
