My wife is very very pregnant, we know it's a girl.

We are struggling with girl names. I was hoping that I wcould generate some ideas here.

What are your favorite girl names?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

This is a useful site.

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

In the section labeled 'popular names by birth year' put in 2008 and select 'top 1000'. That will show you a great list.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Not a recommendation, but worth sharing.... Our vet (an avid Batman fan) and his wife named their daughter Harley Quinn. I hope she doesn't suffer any permanent emotional damage when she gets to the age where she's figured out what they did to her.

We have a very sweet 7 year old neighbor whose name is Jill (Jillian). Hubby suggested Jennifer (hmm...I've never heard that name before; wonder if he had an old girlfriend named Jennifer).

I think names that can generate a variety of nicknames are nice. That way, the name can evolve with the person (Elizabeth, Katharine, Margaret).

We're showing our age with our name choices.
Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

I am not making this up.

My cousin's name is Asta (pronounced Ahsta). Her husband's close friend and best man at their wedding was a guy named....Dan La Vista.

We all got a chuckle out of the "thank god she didn't marry Dan, or she would have been Asta La Vista" joke.

Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

Just make sure the full name (first, middle, and last) totals at least 6 syllables. Eight would be better.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Why? I never heard of that before.

HOLY CARP!!!
One thing I've always thought is that a girl's name should serve her well in adulthood. A lot of names that sound cute and sweet for a child don't sound as appropriate for a judge, a surgeon or an executive.

Names like Elizabeth, Katherine, Isabella and Sarah have that kind of gravitas.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

I guess that rules out "Toodles"

A little bit off topic, but Korean full names almost always are a total of three syllables. The last name is one syllable (like a lot of east Asian countries), and the given name is two syllables. Generally, if you try and register a name with more than 3 syllables, it may be rejected.

I was not aware that it was better to have a US name with at least 6 syllables. I am curious also.

Catherine > Katherine

And a really cool super-heroine name would be Starfire.

My favorites:

Emily (my oldest)
Erin (did not choose because a good friend did first)
Megan (my next oldest)
Laura (my youngest is Lauren, at my wife's request).

I also love the name Sara.

Finally, I love the name Chloe for how it sounds, but I think the spelling looks weird. And I love the name Rachel, for how it looks, but when I think about it, it sounds harsher than I like my girl names to be.

I like the name Regan, but every time I think about the name it sounds like it belongs to a bitchy person (any present company excepted).

Are you saying those names are good for adulthood or not? If not, what about Elizabeths I and II and Catherine the Great?
And how are you today?

No girls in my family, but one of my brothers carries the legal first name of "Robbie". I've never pressed for an explanation on that.

I like:

Sophia
Grace
(I'm considering Sophia Grace as a name if I ever have a girl, and if future hubby would like it too)
Rose
Lynn
Jeanne
Abigail
Hannah
Arianne
Anne
Rosalie
Danielle (don't like the nickname of Dani though)

I could go on if I keep thinking of them.
And how are you today?

Just don't get too creative. I have a coworker that has named her kids Seven and London (although London isn't that bad).

A name with multiple nicknames is a very good idea, like Katherine.

Madison seems popular lately, too.

Yeah, I'm not into that "let's show our creativity through our children's names" thing. Traditional names are traditional because they're good. There are some lesser-known tradtional names that can be used to show uniqueness.

Seven. Really? It is my favorite number, but I wouldn't ever name a kid that. She could have gone with Stefan. It sounds closer to Seven that Stephen, and it's still a real name.
And how are you today?

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments
and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism.

If you pick a cutsey-ridiculous misspelling of an otherwise perfectly legitimate name, I'm not going to be able to talk to you anymore, FR. I'm not good with names so that's really all I have to offer. (I'm serious. Amy's a fine name but Aiymeeiee is liable to give me a brain hemorrhage.)

I cite irreconcilable differences.

For yelling purposes.

"Elizabeth Patrice _______, put that cat down this instant!"

works alot better than

"Rose Lynne ____"

For the sake of contributing to the list, here's a top-of-my-head list of female names in my family:
Madison, Eileen, Elizabeth, Erin, Linda, Megan and Barbara. All good names IMO.

Penn Jillette named his daughter "Moxie CrimeFighter Jillette." I give him props for not trying to be creative and new-age with his kid's name, just going for straightup ridiculous.
