HOLY CARP!!!
So, I'm a bit pathologically lazy in some ways. For instance, I knew I had some money coming back for 2007 and 2008 federal taxes and sort of just let them keep it rather than fill out the forms. What I didn't know at the time is that there's a statute of limitations of 2 years for any tax refund.

The IRS said nothing at all, sent me no notices, until literally the very week the statute of limitations was over for the 2007 return.

Luckily at that point I had already sent it in (realizing that mortgage lenders were going to want to verify my IRS stuff, I had done my back-returns quick-like a couple months ago).

Got the refund check in the mail today. :thumb:

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
I had thought it was a three statue of limitations. Good to know otherwise.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

Yeah what a bunch of BS. You only have 2 years to claim a refund. They have forever.

Agreed! Rather than file an amended return, I just let them keep the lousy $60 we had coming on that phone tax refund deal two years ago (the one they buried at the end of the 1040 where I didn't look for it).

And you pay them interest if you're late, on top of penalties.

They pay no interest.

Yeah, that's total BS. (I'm agreeing with Mark on an IRS point)
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
