Now you can make a donation to help pay off the national debt; they make it really simple

It's a good step, but insufficiently bold.

They should provide incentives for people to donate, e.g., $100 to get a "I donated" T-shirt, $1000 to get a "I donated" certificate signed by your congress representative, $10K to get a room in a federal building named after you, $100K to get a federal court room names after you, $1m to get a lap dance from the House Speaker, $10m to get the President to sing Happy Birthday over the phone to any person you designate, $100m to get your face put on the POTUS seal for all POTUS appearances for a week, $1B to $99B to get your face on US Dollar bills (the more you donate, the larger the bill you face is on), $100B and up to get your face on Mount Rushmore, etc.

if every other family agreed to pay their 125k worth, I would too. We could have this paid off by May.
That is foul.

I refuse to recognize anything the government deems "my portion" of this debt.

I protest every dollar stolen and every dollar spent above what they steal.

I will never "give" them anything.

Why should I give a thief anything?

I don't like the idea because I don't think our national debt is just "this thing that happened." At least part of the reason we're in this mess is because of horribly, horribly sloppy budgeting. And I'm not at all convinced we've improved.

So why in the hell give somebody more money when they're in financial trouble for pissing the batch away that we already gave them?

If we passed a constitutional amendment requiring the middle class pay its share of taxes spending would get cut almost immediately. The problem is those who pay the bills are a small minority of voters.

How would spending get cut if who paid the taxes got adjusted? How can spending get cut any other way besides more proper budgeting?

No, no, this is a great idea. Look at how well that Social Security "Lockbox" has been working.

This is the oddest board.

So many here are just recently obsessed with the deficit, having ignored it for some 10 years prior, and now when offered a way to help do something about it they make jokes.

Puzzling.

1. It's your deficit, not mine.

2. I make jokes about everything.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

No matter where the source or its promised use, the government takes every dollar given it, and spends it at least twice.

I'm a little short this month year. $100 isn't gonna happen.

How much for the tote bag? :cool2:

We could have this paid off by May.
What would be the advantage to doing so?

I wrote them two big checks in April.
It seems like we (the FR Household) have to pay a lot of taxes. The estimated quarterly payments are a bummer, and I do not want to give any more of my $$ to the feds. Luckily between my wife's W2 and my quarterly payments we were just about spot on this time.

But I did just write a frikkin' huge check this April.

That's RIGHT! 2 tote bags.

In lieu of sending them money, I think I'll send them a video of me cashing my tax refund check, and then spending it all on hookers and blow.

FR do you need to send in estimated taxes every quarter, or do you just need to make sure your taxes are paid by the end of the year?

Heh.

I wonder if they have a sustaining membership where I just give them my credit card and a hearty sum comes out each month?

But srsly I think there is a group of multi-millionaires out there who have signed a petition stating that they feel they should pay more.

I kind of think they should. Give them a free weekend trip to DC on a luxury motorcoach with a buffet breakfast and tickets to an a capella group performing on the Capital steps.

If I pay at the end of the year, not only is it a horrific amount of money to cough up at one time, you also get penalized by the IRS. It's not a massive penalty, but I don't want to pay any more than I have to. I remember years ago trying to wait till the end of the year to pay my taxes and just sh!tting when I added everything up. Paying quarterly eases the pain a little.

As a self-employed person there was/is always the temptation to try and report less income than you really made. The problem with that is you can't qualify for loans if you do that. I needed loans. So I always showed as much income as I could.

Quarterly taxes are estimated on what you'll owe next year divided into payments, one of which is April 15th.
