For those interested in the topic, thought I'd post a longish article on how the military may be behind the curve when it comes to how wars are fought: The New Rules of War The rest of you (and that may be everyone) can snooze on.... |

Very interesting article. Thanks for linking it. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

I agree with some of the major tenants of the article - however, I still have difficulty imagining how such a small, mobile "netwar" structure would have dealt with the likes of Sadaam Hussein. I guess it is pretty doubtful that we'll ever get into a massive war again along the lines of a WWII, but it seems we still need to keep a pretty large conventional force if ever we need to push out an invading army from a small ally state, like we did in Kuwait. As for the concept of "swarming", I wonder what it would be like to have massive submarine fleets where each sub holds one to four or so jets that can all be moving surreptitiously around the globe, ready to pop up at a moments notice, launch their jets (or drones if you prefer). After the attack I guess the jets could fly to a friendly coastal air base (refueling on the way if needed) and meet up again with their home mini-sub (or even other mini subs already waiting). |
