Hi Kenny,

I am looking for bakery/cafe type of places along hwy 5 or hwy 101 similar to La Panera Bread or Le Boulanger.

Any such places?

Thanks! ILM

Along 5 or 101...
Hmmm
Sorry, not really my turf.

I'll bet Steve Miller will know; He gets around a lot.
I think he spends more time at WTF than here if you need to reach him quickly.

I just looked at a map.
You are not exactly driving through the most tony of neighborhoods with that route.
I associate bakeries and cafes with higher-income parts of LA.

West Hollywood or West LA is perhaps the most upscale place you will drive anywhere near.
Exit the 101 at Santa Monica Blvd and drive west a long way; you want to be between Fairfax and La Cienega.

Oh, there is La Brea Bakery, on La Brea Ave.

Exit 101 at Santa Monica Blvd.
Drive west and make a left on La Brea Ave.

Then there is Canter's, the Jewish deli and bakery on Faifax near the Farmer's Market.
They have the BEEEEEEEEEEEst cheesecake, after mine of course.

Here's Canter's.

They make a killer corned beef on rye, or you can just pig out on their bakery goods.
The waiters are known to be weird and strange so don't freak out.

La Brea is the place! They make these 'pretzel buns' that are wonderful.

Thanks. We have plans to get food at the La Brea Bakery/Cafe in Disneyland. I will check online to see if there are other La Brea Bakery/Cafe's along the hwy routes.

It is not so much I want the bakery sweet stuff, but the sandwiches and salads.

If you think of any others, let me know, and I will check online.

Again thanks!

The original La Brea is the one on La Brea Ave.
Nancy Singleton started it as a bakery and later it became a restaurant.

I didn't even know they were a chain now.

I only found one other La Brea, which is at Disneyland. Maybe 2 makes a chain?

I just thought about bagel shops like Noah's or other bagel chains. If you know which bagel chain is big in Orange County, please let me know.

Again, thanks!

ILM, sorry but I'm a snob who stays pretty close to the ocean, actually SW of the 405 unless it is north of the 10.

I hate to mention it but Starbucks are everywhere BTW. :hair:

Those were so tasty! They served them at the Getty Center restaurant.

Just wrote a long piece on dining, then lost it! If you are In Disneyland Blue Bayou is the place to eat - it's inside Pirates, and is dark and cool - nice after a few hours in the sun. Reservations are a must, and should be made as far ahead of time as possible. Information at: Blue Bayou

Used to be a good restaurant over by Angel Stadium, but I can' remember the name.

I-5 and 101 covers a lot of ground. Where in particular will you be?

Hi 1hp,
As it turns out, The Blue Bayou Restaurant will be closed when we are at Disneyland. I have dined there in the past, and yes, it is a nice place to be after walking in the sun.

I am looking for "healthy" sandwich places near hwy 101 (decided not to consider hwy 5), for the San Luis Obispo area down to Anaheim. A "chain" type similar to La Panera Bread, Le Boulanger, and La Brea. I haven't found those chains to be near hwy 101. A "chain" bagel place that serves sandwiches and salads would work too.

Thanks! ILM

Just south of Pismo Beach is the town of Arroyo Grande. Best tri-tip sandwich I've ever had (that whole area is known for tri-tip). Trying to get the name of the sandwich shop for you - it's not a chain!

If you are up that way in the evening, take a ride into Arroyo Grande after 8pm - a step back into the past. We stopped on our way up to Pebble Beach last summer - the bar we parked outside of was filled with 40 year old+ adults - all two stepping to a live band. The bar across the street was the same.

+1 on the steak place in Arroyo Grande. "Santa Maria style" it is - delish! :thumb:

Bagel/salad chains in SoCA - lots to choose from and they are everywhere. 101 to the 5 and south to Disneyland is the route.

Hundreds of Subways, of course. Good bagel/salad place in the food court at the Thousand Oaks Galleria (101 and Lynn - Thousand Oaks). In fact any shopping mall is going to have a sandwich/salad place in the food court.

Many Panera Breads and La Boulangerie. Also look for "Corner Bakery", another decent chain. Lots of "Togos", lots of "Quiznos". You might also like "Mimis Cafe" - another chain. Good food, large menu, vaguely French. There is one at Harbor Blvd. and the 5 right next to Disneyland.

You say you are looking for healthier food. I'll be interested in hearing how you like the food here. I don't know where you are coming in from, but I have found the food in other parts of the country to be quite a bit "heavier" than we normally get here. More butter, more sauces, larger portions. If you stay away from Mexican food (but why would you - it's the best! :thumb: ) you may find that any restaurant you go in to will have a meal on the menu that you will like.

Go for the fresh fruit and veg. 'tis the season, and what we get here is a lot different from what I have seen in other places.

Steve Miller,
Thanks for your response. I am from the SF Bay area. We will be having enough unhealthy food in Disneyland, so this is why I wanted to try to dine in some "healthy" and a lot less expensive places on the way down and back home. :-)

It has been a long time since my last trip to Disneyland. California Adventure wasn't there on my last trip, which was 2 decades ago. One thing I have heard is that the food is expensive and awful. Apparently, a bottle of water is expensive there.

After our return, I will post our dining places.

Here are three strong recommendations for restaurants in San Luis Obispo.

Big Sky - healthy and not expensive. I especially recommend them for breakfast.

For upscale Italian dinner, maybe lunch, there's Cafe Roma - near the train depot.
or
Buona Tavola downtown.
The last two are pricey but VERY worth it.
Buona Tavola is probably lighter fare than Cafe Roma.

If you are taking the coastal route from SLO to San Francisco you MUST eat at Robin's in Cambria.
It is health food but tastes fantastic and the atmosphere is comfy and homey.
It's in an old house in historic Cambria north of San Luis Obispo.

I lived near SLO for years so I know the area.
I can not recommend these restaurants strongly enough, though I have not been there for 12 years, they are still in business.

If you go through Big Sur rob a bank so you can afford to eat at a restaurant with the absolute best view in the known universe.

In San Luis Obispo you must not miss Linnaea's Cafe - an old quintessential hippie cafe.
Sit outside in the red-brick patio under a fern and next to their koi pond.
Live acoustic music.

Hi Kenny,

I have written down Big Sky and Linnea Cafe on a Post-it note to take with me. Probably on the way down, we will bag our lunch (save money), but on the way home dine at one of the two you mentioned.

Thank you all for your help! ILM

As you walk up Higurea between Big Sky and Linnea's Cafe DO check out Bubble Gum Alley , which is not really an alley, just some wasted space between two buildings.

Yes, it is exactly what you fear it is.
Notice how it stops about as high as a college student can reach?
Feel free to make a donation.

Big Sky (on Broad St) is in lower left corner.
Bubble Gum alley is near the middle of the pic on the left edge.
Linnaea's Cafe is on the right side near the middle of the pic on Garden St but they put Linnaea's name at the back of the building, which is misleading because you enter from Garden St.
