A different take (obviously not one I share) http://www.businessinsider.com...-end-the-ruse-2010-4 However I admit this resonated: That's because the charade will be over. It will be very clear who pays the bills for the federal government and then instead of an F.U. for paying the country's bills, people who earn substantial sums through their own skill and efforts and thus pay large amounts of taxes might get a small thank you. It would then be far more difficult, politically, to expand wasteful entitlement programs because it would just be glaringly obvious who is paying and who is simply receiving. It's not that all entitlement programs are necessarily bad, we believe in some form of support for the less fortunate, but at the very least there would be far more emphasis on entitlement spending for the very needy only, if it were so clear that most Americans aren't even funding the federal government. |

This, I think, is based far more on wishful thinking than an acute understanding of human nature. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

This is exactly the sort of obfuscation that I objected to in your earlier thread on increasing taxes, Jon. The fact that a goodly number of Americans do not pay any net income tax for a variety of reasons ignores the fact that many (probably most) of them pay other federal taxes, primarily social security and medicare taxes, that fund exactly those entitlement programs being railed about. Indeed, and the payroll tax is nothing but an income tax by another name. (and a rather regressive one at that, at least the FICA portion) As for the other thread, I was careful to qualify that I would include payroll taxes in any calculation. |

What about the ruse that taxes can be shifted from taxpaying citizens and onto corporations or businesses? (Thinking about recent discussion from Dem's in congress about taxing air carriers - in apparent retaliation for charging for carry on baggage). |

In NY they are too afraid to raise the subway fares to something reasonable, so they've resorted to a 'commuter tax' that employers pay. We had to pay it since Rachel is a freelancer (self employed). It pisses me off, they should just double the goddam subway fare so we can have a good service. No on in the naiton spends less on transportation than NYCers. |

Hey jon, here's a better idea. Cut the size and scope of the freaking government and put a spending cap on it. |
