Before now developers have been free to use many different tools to create applications for the iPhone and iPad.

Imminent changes to the way the iPhone software development kit is used will restrict these tools to just three.
...
But critics say the changed text in section 3.3.1 of the development licence move is unnecessarily restrictive and is aimed more at Apple's rivals than poor quality code.
...
Any application submitted to Apple that does not use the mandated tools will be rejected.
...
Industry experts said the restrictions might be intended to stop developers re-using applications written with Adobe's Flash. Neither the iPhone nor iPad can run Flash applications.
Adobe released a software package, Creative Suite 5, on 12 April which can turn Flash code into iPhone code.

Flash programs are very widely used on the web and many games and videos are created using the software. However, under the new terms and conditions using Creative Suite 5 would lead to an application being rejected.

I have never been inclined to develop software for Apple computers. I'm sure, given the imposed standard, it must be smooth sailing, but I'll take the tower of babel that is "pc" software development anyday, headache that it can be. Of course, if I really had my choice, I wouldn't program at all! :)

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

People always considered Microsoft "evil" for its attempts to impede competitors and restrict the usage of its software.

It is getting more and more clear that Apple is worse.

When you have an edge you want to keep it. The vast majority of people will care no more about this than they did about Microsoft's efforts at exclusivity and it will likely end up being a good move competitively.

You know, I wondered the same thing.

when someone posts an article without making any reasoned comment on it, and couples it with an incendiary title, one wonders whether the main purpose is really information, or having some fun by stirring the pot after turning the temperature up. I guess in general I'm not very fond of threads like this.

Well, at least software developers are pretty upset about it.

If software developers hate to program for iPhone and iPad then this is a competitive disadvantage for Apple.

Back in the day, there was a computer company that started specializing in printers (dot matrix if I remember right). Thing was, they wanted to have an "edge" like that too, so they made their printer parts totally unique, so that you'd have to get all the replacement parts from them, also. I think even the ink and toner was unique, not just the cartridges.

I forget the name of the company because they're out of business now. I just remember how stupid that business plan sounded.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I was actually kidding, and this was a paraphrase from a post in the other thread Ax started on the Vatican.

I was using lame humor to point something out - if only I could remember what it was.
Nothing to see here. Move on.

What an odd reaction from you and Phlebas. This is certainly newsworthy and relevant.

Joe Biden experiences that all the time.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!
