From Wikipedia:

Quote:

Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."

He's written some amazing music, but like some artists (*cough* Dylan *cough*) it sounds best when done by someone else.

When you dreEeEeeEaaAAaaM! :lol2:

To illustrate, here's the Holly Cole Trio covering Waits' "All I've Got Is Empty Pockets Now (Purple Avenue)": Enjoy.

NAK: You should listen to Grapefruit Moon -- Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes singing the songs of Tom Waits. Great album!

That is disgusting singing.
Chris, I think you're being magnanimous by even calling it singing.

:thumb: I love Holly Cole. She could sing anything and make it something you sit on the edge of your seat to hear.

She's amazing, eh? One of Canada's gifts to the jazz world. Have you heard any of her later albums? I pretty much jumped off the wagon after she ditched the trio because, for me, what made her so good was how tight her group was. David Piltch and Aaron Davis were such great accompanists, and they all had such amazing chemistry in their arrangements. The bass+voice rendition of "My Baby Just Cares For Me" on Girl Talk is a fantastic display of their ability to make a little sound like a lot. The introduction of drums, guitars, and pop-ish rhythms was a turn for the worse, IMO.

IT, I'll put that on my wish list. Waits covers FTW.

If having an appreciation for clear, melodious tone makes me snob, I embrace my snobbery wholeheartedly. :lol2:

Tom Waits is cool.. quite the poet with distinct sound. This song is so good. It played at the end of the movie 'Smoke' with Harvey Keitel.

apple
one of the angels
The bats are in the belfry
the dew is on the moor
where are the arms that held me
and pledged her love before
and pledged her love before
Chorus:
It's such a sad old feeling
the fields are soft and green
it's memories that I'm stealing
but you're innocent when you dream
when you dream
you're innocent when you dream
Running through the graveyard
we laughed my friends and I
we swore we'd be together
until the day we died
until the day we died
Repeat chorus
I made a golden promise
that we would never part
I gave my love a locket
and then I broke her heart
and then I broke her heart
it behooves me to behold

No kidding. Her early stuff with just the trio is magic. I never understood why she thought it was a good idea to add all the rest of the filler material. It just isn't needed.

No, that's not what makes you a snob. A lot of people have an appreciation for clear, melodious tone. It's that you can't seem to appreciate the musical genius of someone who does not fit into to your narrow category of "singing". ;)
