Incandescent bulbs going the way of the dinosaur?

I had no idea that incandescent bulbs are going to be phased out in the (relatively) near future.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362492,00.asp

I use a lot of fluorescents, but still like that warm yellowish tungsten tinge in some rooms for general lighting. Halogen is too white and harsh. Fluorescents have gotten better, as I hope LEDs will.

I even have some old floor lamps that use mogul base bulbs. Great lighting for these aging eyes... :nerd:

One tech bandwagon I'm not jumping on.

LED: less and inferior light, 25 times the lifespan for 100 times the price.

Like replacing a car with a more expensive bicycle.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

I've had no success whatsoever using CFL's in applications where there's a dimmer or an automatic light sensor, so I think phasing out incancesdents is nuts until an viable alternative is developed.

We converted years ago, happily.

The only place I'm not using a CFL is in the freezer.

I've seen some pretty cool mini-halogen bulbs, but they put off a lot of heat and I don't think I've seen them in anything less than 75 watts.

On another note, I saw an LED light that said it was a replacement for a 40 watt bulb, but it didn't have its "lumens" listed on the package. I saw another LED bulb that seemed to look exactly the same, and it said it was rated at something l like 120 lumens. A regular 40 watt bulb is several times brighter than that. I am pretty wary of being snookered by LEDs. I still don't understand why they don't take a boatload of LEDs, stick'em on one bulb so that it's bright as an equivalent incandescent/fluorescent, and put a filter on it to cast a warm glow. I realize that essentially cuts down on the light getting thru, but can't they add enough LEDs to compensate for the loss?

One way to categorize people is how they like to light their houses. Some seem to like to have them brightly lit. Fortunately, my wife and I agree on the much more relaxed feel of a dimly lit house. At night we usually watch TV by the light of a single 40 watt fluorescent.

I use CFLs as much as possible, although I still need incandescent for some of the "dimming" or particular places.

I use LEDs for under-the-cabinet kitchen lighting though. Lasts forever, barely uses energy, barely produces any heat.

What I'll hate is replacing the bulbs in closets and in the garage - two places where we typically use the light for just seconds at a time. I still hear that fluorescents don't like to be switched on an off a lot. Cuts down on their lifespan - one of the reasons we are supposed to want them.

True. My closet CFLs don't last any longer than an incandescent.

The last time I was in China I was struck by all the CFLs everywhere I went. Whether it was a home or restourant or shop they were everywhere. It seemed to happen all at once since they were not so ubiquitous all the other times I was there.

Our garage was lit by two 75 watt incandescent bulbs. It was always just a bit too little, especially with some of the overhead racks we have in there, to light the entire area. I finally figured out I could put a double socket adapter to double the lights. Much better now.

Some day in the future maybe we'll just have to use a wind up miner's hat.

So now conservatives are catching up and using CFLs too?

Finally.

Cheap, and last longer.

I buy out of logic, not out of politically correct pressure. :)

(Just as I've always said I'll buy a hybrid when it makes financial sense for my budget)

The conservatives don't allow me to call myself one.

We have been using CFLs since they first came out many years ago. I like them better than the old incandescent bulbs for several reasons. Life-span and lower energy consumption being the main reasons.

I will drive a hybrid in a few years when I can afford an used Mercedes S400 Hybrid which are just now coming to market. I would say that will happen within 5-7 years.

I have nothing against saving energy. I'm all for it actually.

But, I will not force it on anyone.

Live and let live!

Dammit!

I like incandescents. I'll be sorry to see them phased out. If they go away I'll probably go halogen all the way. I really don't like the light of CFLs at all and I'm not convinced they're better for the environment either.

From the article: "However, that doesn't mean that the world of lighting is free from any big shake-ups. GE's product launch actually arrives in the shadow of U.S. Federal lighting efficiency standards, due to come into effect in 2012, which mandate a gradual phasing out of incandescent bulbs over a two-year span. Kiss 100-watt incandescent bulbs goodbye first, with 75-watt bulbs scheduled for a 2013 phase-out. The 60- and 40-watt bulbs leave last in 2014. "

Better stock up, 89, unless you think the deadlines will be changed.

Our garage was lit by two 75 watt incandescent bulbs.
Check Home Depot or Lowes for some of the new 65 watt CFL, 300 watt incandescent replacement lamps. They're too big for most fixtures but in an open application like a garage they're perfect. You have to ask the HD/Lowes guy where they are as they don't display them with the other CFL lamps. About $15.

We have been doing a brisk business removing the 100 and 150 watt incandescent bulbs in warehouses (keyless and dog-dish fixtures) and putting in these. Warmup is about 30 seconds - not bad for the application. There is also a 105 watt CFLs, 400 watt incandescent replacement lamp available, but we haven't tried any yet.

As for dimming, I have tested dimming CFLs in my own house and they work just fine. In fact they are indistinguishable from the incandescent lamps I have on either side. Home Depot - green package. A little $pendy yet but they work great.

John - maybe I should stock up! Interesting to see they are so aggressive with the standard. Naturally, I disagree with them meddling with the free market like this.

As far as us, we've been using CFLs almost exclusively for at least the last three, maybe four years, with very few complaints.

We have an entryway light that is operated by a photosensor - when it gets dark, the light comes on. A CFL doesn't last three days in that fixture.
