I'm building an arbor for the kiwi. I have the cardboard tube to sink into the ground, and the metal thingie to sink into the cement that I will set the posts on (I don't want to put the posts in the cement) - Should I buy the stuff that I have to mix with sand, or should I buy the stuff that's all ready to go and just add the water?

Boy, jodi, I think I'd be tempted to go with the pre-mixed stuff, unless it's a much bigger project than I'm envisioning. How much do you need? How big is this project?

Cement is one of those great mysteries of life. Seems so simple, but difficult to do well.

I've used the "dump it in the hole dry and add water" variety on two occasions. First time it was OK, second time it developed cracks. Don't know why.

Where's Steve Miller? I haven't seen him around lately, either...

Ready mix for that small job - but you should also add some crushed stone, so what you have is concrete, not just cee-ment.

Why don't you want the posts in the cement? I think it makes it soooo much sturdier. A good pressure treated posts in concrete (the kind that comes with the rocks in it) will probably outlast everyone on this board. I put gravel in the very bottom of the hole, put the post in, a bit more gravel so that concrete doesn't form a "cup" around the bottom of the pole. Mix the cement so it is quite thick, pour it in until you get just below ground level (so you don't get frost heave trying to pull the post up). Smooth the top if you like.

I read that line a few times, confused, until I realized I was reading it wrong, and it actually didn't say "I'm building ann arbor for the kiwi."

Oh yeah, in the spirit of architectural overkill: about three inches above the bottom of the post, screw a pretty good-sized lag bolt into two opposite sides of the post, sticking out of the post a couple inches. Then go up another ten inches or so, and do the same thing only on the two other opposing sides of the post. These protruding "lugs" will offer even more positive embedment in the concrete. That arbor won't go anywhere.

I love architectural overkill. Use galvanized lag bolts.

Oh you mean a kiwi :lol2:
(for just a moment my daughter & I were really wondering how the heck you'd got a kiwi)

I am going to go with cedar posts, not pressure treated. I want to be able to replace them if I need to (which would be difficult if they were set into the cement). I got a bid for it from the guy who built my deck last summer - he told me $1700. I didn't want to spend that much, so I decided I'd give it a go myself.

Here's my REALLY quick and awful :lol2: sketch - it's basically a craftsman type trellis with a bench. I can't decide if I should do two or four top pieces. (so either two on the outside like in the drawing, or add two extra on the inside of the posts)

I would like it to have a similar feel to the corner trellis that I designed for the deck:

Google "280 W Dartmouth, Gladstone, OR", use the street view and check out the arbor I built at our last house. It looks pretty similar to your design. I'd recommend you use a board on either side of the 4x4 - just like you did on the deck. I think it looks better and it will keep the same design that you already have. Anyway, just buy the concrete premix - not cement. Concrete comes with the rocks mixed in so you don't have to worry about it. I used similar brackets set in concrete on a back deck I made - but I was so concerned about getting the height correct that I found a set of threaded brackets so I could adjust them after the concrete was set.

Jodi, it's going to look great! And FWIW, I agree with you about the metal anchors for the posts. ^_^
