New ways to bring in members?

People have been discussing the fact that TNCR doesn't seem to get a lot of new members.

Maybe we just need some new gimmicks

I did notice that a couple of new members who seemed to be younger were looking for things we don't have, like a separate "Introduce yourself" section. They posted once or twice and left.

I'm an old fogey with no preconceived idea of how a forum should operate, but if we're looking for new blood....

Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

Maybe we should post naked
That's been a rule since day one, hasn't it?

I remember my welcome thread and thought it was a great idea; George started it after I made my first post in another thread. I have to admit I wasn't exactly sure how to get started posting here, as it was the first forum I had ever joined.

After I read some recent newbie's question about "where's your Introduce Yourself section?" I thought it sounded like a good idea.

It lets people read about other members to see what the population is like. I've found the WTF'er of the Month threads helped me get to know the various members without having to read a zillion threads.

Just a thought...

Naked can be good, but it depends on who it is...

OTOH, money is always good...

Everyone is looking for something different, and I have to say I understand where Scoutie is coming from. I had gone away for some time because I found the mood around here wasn't what I was looking for. I also realized that I shouldn't try to change it. Either live with it or go away. I went away.

I guess the question is, how do you get people to come here, find out what the place is all about, and want to participate in the longer term if it's a good fit for them?

I think Q-L identified one element when he said that there is no overarching topic here. Your original topic was pianos at PW, and now you are a spinoff. Those that are already here have that connection because they are part of that history. For new folks, they're starting from scratch with no frame of reference.

We usually have a 'Welcome <you name here?' thread for new folks.
And it generally takes about 2 posts before people start asking really aggressive questions such as 'are you sure you're not TomK?' or 'Which particular Italian tank did you say you drove for Mussolini again?' etc.

And where was that vitriol coming from? It wasn't from Larry since Scoutie was here - he posts very seldom.

My point is that he got unfairly blamed for all of TNCR's problems.

Scoutie used the term "blood sport" in one of her last posts.

For me, not one person in particular. Just the overall mood.

There is no blame. It just is the way it is.

actually i think this demise was inevitable.

since the great schism of 2005, when everything split, i thought that the division would lead to the eventual collapse of all three places, for many reasons. the fact the we r still here 5 years later is quite a feat. maybe just newton's first law...object in motion staying in motion, but with gathering entropy resulting in a more disorganized system.

i think forums where all agree (or at least members are predictable ) on the major issues, can get tres boring, and there is no constant source of new blood . so while the old cast of characters has gotten to know each other better and better, casual drop outs, rehashing threads, and lack of new personalities has simply made everything go stale. moldy even.

i dont know what to do,

in an ideal world, all shady characters from all 3 forums would be forced upon each other in one forum, and just put up with it. just like the real world. thats always been my viewpoint. alas, i dont think that will happen.

the only reason i post here and not WTF is that i decided that i really only want to stick to one place, and i sort of arbritrarily found myself here more often then there. it could have easily been there more then here. it has nothing to do with left or right political leanings.
i think the piano section at WTF is alot more useful then the non entity we have here. quite frankly, u can take the politics and religion section and the piano shack section and just dump them. no one would notice the difference for weeks or months i bet. and it just confuses new comers who are naive enough to post there.

its depressing.

we need to revitalize. someone to take control and force the three forums together.otherwise its just getting too lame.

and the educational value of such a closed forum declines when its just the same group of people with the same ideas in different shades of gray.

how utterly and stupidly boring.
