i'm so happy for you. I am looking for a new hands-on interest since i hope I never have to go back to trucking. Be it for a livelihood or otherwise. Small engine and/or marine engine repair has always interested me, although it's not nearly as glamorous as piano stuff. I worked on a tugboat in high school and the captain always had one of the three V=12 diesel engines torn down for some preventive procedure or another. It stuck.

HOLY CARP!!!
Today I worked on a fabulous Yamaha S4 grand positioned in front of a picture window with a fantastic view.
The owner is a composer and conductor for films in Hollywood with gold records on his wall.
The piano was whipped into line, came to life and blossomed under my hands.
It is the third time he's called me, so I guess he likes my work.

A neighbor heard all the noise and came over; she was so delighted to see a piano tech working.
It was if I was a craftsman of buggy whips and she cherished the old ways.
She has been meaning to get her Baldwin grand tuned.
She's an older gal and her dad was a piano tuner.

I took a break and walked over to her house.
She had her dad's fabulous art case Baldwin grand practically sagging under the weight of framed family photos.
She was so excited about getting her piano worked on.

Music and pianos mean so much to people.
Sometimes they treat you like you are a pediatrician healing their children.
They trust you with their babies.

It's certainly not easy work, but it pays well and you are your own boss.

Awesome, Kenny. Really great that you're finding clients with nice instruments, and the money to have them looked after. I'm so glad things are working out for you.

Do you have as much work as you can handle now or are you still building up to that?
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Oh goodness, still building.

But I haven't spend a dime on advertising.
All word of mouth.

Very happy for you.
Do you have to protect your hearing at all?
You don't have to, but I do.
I went to an audiologist and got fitted for a pair of these. Not cheap

I show them and explain them to clients that I can hear everything I need to hear with them and, because of them, years from now I'll still be able to hear everything I need to hear.

An important factor of course was having the savings to do this right, to pay for a good education, tools, supplies, plus pay the bills during the ramp up of the new business. (You youngins save your shekels; you never know what tomorrow may bring.)

I admit, I didn't think I'd have this much work already.

So glad you're happy, Kenny! I'd love to learn how to tune pianos and rebuild them! Maybe one day...
And how are you today?

I think the ear plugs are a good investment. I would do the same.

I am happy to see you so well suited to this.

I don't think there is any official code of silence, but I'm just not a name dropper.
In the past I've used piano techs who spout off the names off all these big shots they tuned for and it made me want to throw up a little.
...but I guess I am bragging just by mentioning this. :weeping:

Let's just say the films are household names.

Klaus, I'd love to tune your Grotrian.
I don't require first class airfare; business class is acceptable. :lol2:

It would be sooo cool to brag at parties by saying "tomorrow I'll have my piano tuner flown in from LA to tune my Grotrian" that I am almost tempted.

Almost.

Hey, why don't you offer "Remote Tuning"? I'll sit on my piano with a tuning hammer in my hand and you'll instruct me via videoconferencing. That's such a great business idea - you should thank me for it by offering a free non-remote tuning for my piano

Kenny I am really happy to hear how things are developing for you. Soon you'll be wielding an appointment book 3 inches thick.

"Hello, this is Kenny. Oh...you want your piano serviced? The next available appointment is 3 weeks from now, will that work for you? OK, I'll see you then!"

:thumb:

You da man, Kenny.

It is so nice to hear that your business is taking off! You so deserve it..

And good on you for the ear plugs. My piano tech can't tune, he only does the fine mechanical work. He has terrible pain from hearing damage that when he is here, I banish the kids from the house and if I have to do something loud (one time it was hang curtain rods) he needs to use big ole head phones. His wife is the tuner and says she is unable to practice while he is at home...How sad is that?

Good on you to preserve your precious hearing...You are free to come an work on my baby anytime.
