http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2010/04/confederate_history_month_rise.html I think this is just as legit as any other "something history month" out there. Not really necessary, but fine if it helps a certain group of people remember (or learn about) something. It's near the 150-year anniversary of the start of the deadliest US war in history, and how it and the confederacy impacted Virginia is something quite important, especially to many in this state. Of course, the ignorant reactions of "this is about the support of slavery!" reactions are coming in as expected... |

I think it's a great idea, simply because it pisses those kinds of people off. Stars and bars FTW! |

Not quite sure I'd go so far as Stars and Bars FTW, but I don't have any problem with recognition of the courage and valor, and observance of the losses suffered by, the Confederate troops. That does not immediately translate into support for slavery or claims that all the things the Confederacy fought for were correct.

I'm going to organise a celebration of pre-revolutionary America in Massachusetts this summer - fly the old Union Flag proudly from atop the Foxborough flagpole - the town's named after a British MP, after all! |

It wouldn't be so bad, but did he forget we already have Lee-Jackson Day, which a lot of people don't seem to know about? |
