Haven't we already lost enough people here due to accusations of racism?

Racism is exactly what this is. This is a country built on its immigrants. Most of us have immigrant grandparents or parents. It is very, very common to refer to the mother land or the home land when referring to the country of origin of our recent forbears. So what do we have here? A stale, 2008 clip of Michelle referring to Obama's home land. So what *is* the point of it?

PS: I am not accusing IT of being racist, but rather, posting something that has been circulating, for a long time, in a lame, but clearly racist manner. And, Dewey, let's not be the pot here. I'd like to, but have trouble forgetting your lobbing the anti-semite tag at me on this forum awhile back.

I didn't realize it was from a couple of years ago, I saw the Youtube date of April 03 2010 and thought it was recent. I suppose you track all these gaffes that the Obamas make a lot more closely than I do -- I can't imagine how you do it since they make so many.

I don't get the racism point at all. If Henry Kissinger talked about Germany as his homeland or fatherland, or Zbigniew Brzezinski spoke of Poland as his homeland, we would know exactly what he meant. I don't call any country in Europe my homeland. Making that "racist" is really stretching to defend your guy.

Kathy, you are without a doubt one of the stupidest human beings I've ever met.

YOU are the one injecting racism. If the sorry son of a bitch had been born in Ireland and his wife had mentioned his home country of Ireland, it would be the same thing, because the point isn't his RACE you pickle brained moron, it is his birth location.

Have to comment that I don't get the racist bit either. It appears that if you say anything about Obama you are racist. Does this apply equally to black people talking about George Bush?

As for Kenya - doesn't the black community have a habit of classifying them selves as African-Americans?

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive to the issue. Without a doubt, my rankles had already been raised. Yesterday morning, prior to my seeing the post here, there was a fairly prominent article in our local paper about a selectman from one of the larger towns in Maine. She was caught circulating a spam e-mail many of you have probably seen. It was a picture of Michelle Obama next to one of a monkey, and the caption was something along the lines of this: Sarah Palin was descended from Adam and Eve, Michelle Obama from the monkey. It's one thing to continually rake our president over the coals. I certainly did my share with W, but it really seems over the top to drag the family through the mud. This incident, was not only very stale, but it is such a minor slip - yeah, not a great choice of words, but really just a big nothing - that I have to wonder why it's continuing to circulate.

Kathyk, really, to bring a certifiable nutjob into the discussion in an off hand comparative manner is really really insulting.

Let me add some more detail to the story. I don't think she was a certfiable nut job. The e-mail wasn't widely disseminated, but it found its way to someone for whom it wasn't intended - as it was, and African-American woman. The selectman was a 70 year old woman. Her response was first, one of huge embarrassment and remorse, and next, something along the lines of, I just thought it was a funny joke, and had no idea people might find it offensive. It's that willful kind of ignorance that really bothers me, and I know as well as any of you that her response was far from uncommon. I get that kind of spam all the time from my right-wing brother, and I even got it for awhile from my apolitical sister. She once sent me the diatribe that was circulating (probably still is) "proving" Obama is a Muslim. After I set her straight on that one, she quit sending that carp. This stuff has a much wider approving audience than nut jobs.

KathyK - you really should be consistent. People made fun of Bush looking like a monkey all the time. See below....there are definitely pictures of Michelle Obama where she DOES have the expression of a monkey. So does Bush!

As I said in my post above, 89, I draw the line at ripping apart the president's family. Also, with regard to the chimp comparisons to Bush, there was no racist overtone in those. That was more akin to making fun of Obama's blue lips or funny ears. The Michelle evolved from monkey joke was blatantly racist.

Mik, are you reading this thread? What did you say over at FS's about Larry's bad behavior being in the past? His stalking of me has not stopped, if you haven't noticed.
