What's next, charging us extra for wearing clothes? Click Partial Snip CNN) -- With many airlines now charging a fee for checked luggage, the next step had to come sometime: A carrier asking passengers to pay for the privilege of bringing carry-on bags on board. Well, that time is here. Spirit Airlines announced Tuesday that it will charge its customers $20 to $45 for items they place in the overhead bins. The cost depends on whether passengers are members of the airline's ultra-low fare club and whether they "pre-reserve" their carry-on bag in advance. Each passenger will still able to bring one personal item that fits under a seat for free, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack or laptop computer. They also won't have to pay extra for items such as diaper bags, pet containers and cameras. |

I'm not surprised. One (entirely predictable) side effect of charging for checked bags is that people carry on loads of crap, and boarding takes forever. |

From what I've read, profits (if any) for airlines are so incredibly tight now that every possible area they can make money, they'll try. With the rising price of oil again, I only see this getting worse... And the market continues..... |

Yep. Although they seem to have more pricing power than last year. We just paid ~1000 ea for coach seats to Stockholm (x4 - ouch!). 89 - what did you pay for your europe tix? I think you're going early enough to still get good deals. |

Jon - I actually used miles to get my ticket (although I have a bit more waiting at the airport because of it), but my friends who got tickets from DC to London and then returning from Rome to DC paid about $1,100 for the round trip...and that's after watching the price for months. To give perspective, my round trip ticket to Rome in 2005 cost half that. |

Exactly. It was only a matter of time. It's turned into a secondary baggage check procedure where you check your carry-on bag at the gate of the plane, they load the bags in a special "checked bag" loading section, and then you wait at the gait for your "carry on." |

What they needed to do was tell those knobheads to return to the ticket counter to check in their bags and pay the fee. If they miss the plane, so be it. |
